Son of Man, 2026
by Tianhao @tianhaoart
80x60cm Oil on canvas
Now available @artsy

Son of Man centers on the fusion of a human-shaped shooting target and the formal language of a monument. Through symbolism and absurdity, it advances a philosophical proposition: the human being is both the target and the monument. From this duality emerges a deeper assertion that history exists only through the existence of people.
The target functions as a direct metaphor for the individual’s passive condition within society. Its bullseye marks the focal point of scrutiny and attack, where social pressure and external standards render the human figure an object under constant aim. The staged presentation, framed by velvet rope and heavy drapery, transforms this condition from mere targeting into sustained observation and consumption, revealing the absurdity of existence within systems of spectacle and control.
At the same time, the target’s upright posture and solid base deliberately reference the visual authority of monuments. What is conventionally meant to be destroyed is reconstituted as something that stands. The concentric rings of the target signify both vulnerability and inner essence. They mark the points where external forces strike, and these impacts do not erase the individual. Instead, they condense experience, allowing will, memory, and endurance to accumulate and form the monument’s inner core.
Each such figure becomes an individual monument and a fundamental unit of history. Without real people enduring pressure, absorbing impact, and constructing meaning through lived experience, collective historical narratives cannot take shape. By juxtaposing destruction and commemoration, the work reveals a fundamental truth of human existence: it is precisely the experience of being targeted that gives rise to the value of becoming monumental.
Countless individual monuments, accumulated over time, converge to form the current of history itself, affirming that without people, there is no history.

Parenting III, 2026
by Tianhao @tianhaoart
80x80cm Oil on canvas
Now available @artsy

In Parenting III, a young woman gathers an oversized coat around her body, pink ruffles framing her watchful face. Across the water, a window glows. Above her, an enormous cat leaps through the sky.

The coat recalls a mother adding one more layer against the cold. Here, that care almost conceals the person it protects. The daughter holds it close, suggesting how difficult it can be to set aside something given with love, even when it becomes a burden. Nearby fishing nets echo this tension between protection and restriction.

The water suggests a quieter distance: the things a daughter leaves unsaid to spare her mother worry, until sharing her life becomes harder. Above her, the cat moves with impossible freedom, perhaps embodying her wish to live without guilt and return home as the person she has become.

The painting’s tenderness lies in the possibility that both fear losing each other. Growing up asks the daughter to choose without feeling ungrateful, and the mother to discover that being needed less does not mean being loved less. The window remains lit, holding the hope that a life her mother never imagined can still be welcomed home.

Blessed, 2026
by Tianhao @tianhaoart
65x80cm Oil on canvas
Now available @artsy

Against the grey sky and still water, the fire offers inviting warmth and light. Its colour draws us across the painting; we can feel the heat. It is unsettling to realize how readily we are drawn to the thing consuming everything it touches. The blackened straw lies beside the brightest flames: attraction and consequence are siblings, born of the same fire.

That feeling can be familiar. Think of work you love enough to keep giving it another evening. It gives you purpose, and being needed feels good. Gradually, the people you meant to see stop expecting you, and the things you planned to do keep getting postponed. You can recognize what it is taking from your life and still look forward to returning the next morning. The satisfaction that drew you in is still there. You see the fire, and still, like a moth drawn to its light, you move closer.

The fire remains beautiful as he moves away. To escape its reach, he has to step into cold water. The first thing he will feel is the shock of losing the comfort and warmth that made him want to stay.

The painful truth is that what is consuming you may also be what gets you through the day. Leaving asks you to face life without the comfort you have learned to rely on. You understand the danger and still hesitate at the water’s edge. Staying lets you postpone the pain of separation, but you pay for that delay with more of yourself.

His next step may plunge him into a cold so sharp that he aches for the warmth he has just left. Only later might he understand what staying would have cost him: how close he came to losing everything, and how blessed he was to leave while he still could.

The World Can Wait, 2026

“Oh, good. You’ve finally decided to do nothing.
I’ve been recommending it for years.
Okay, just lie there. Leave one foot in the air. Look at the water. Breathe.
See? The room is just the right temperature, the sheets are soft, and you have excellent company.
The errands, the emails, that thing you think you should be doing? They’ll all be there after our nap.
Trust me. I’m very good at this.”

All the Time It Took, 2026
by Tianhao @tianhaoart
30x30cm Oil on canvas

Tianhao replaces the hands of a wooden clock with an open pair of scissors. Their blades point to 10:04, the moment lightning strikes the clock tower in Back to the Future and powers Marty’s return from 1955 to 1985. The Roman numerals still mark the hours, but the scissors suggest a clock capable of changing the course it measures.

The work recalls the temptation to revisit an earlier season of life and see how things might have unfolded differently. With distance, we come to understand how each season has shaped us, including those we could make little sense of while living through them. Perhaps the scissors cut through the wish to rearrange what has already happened. Every hour has brought us to this one; there is no other timeline we need to catch up to. To love the person you are today is to honor every season that brought you here, including the moments you once wished you could change.

The Strategist, 2026
by Tianhao @tianhaoart
Oil on canvas 70x70cm
Now available @artsy

What rises above the water testifies to a far larger reality concealed beneath the surface. Perched at the highest point in the room, the cat holds the broadest possible view: the world already in his possession around him and the distant horizon before him. His strength lies in position. From this vantage, isolated details no longer remain isolated. He can perceive how each element belongs to the larger order.

The iceberg provides a central metaphor. Its exposed peak is only a small portion of its true form, suggesting that the most decisive part of any situation often shrouded from first glance. A strategist knows how to read what is visible as evidence of what is hidden. He understands that we rarely encounter the world in complete form. We see fragments first, and from those fragments must infer the deeper structure that holds them together.

For that reason, the cat remains still. His stillness is not inactivity, but mastery over the impulse to move too soon. He watches until seeing ripens into understanding, and understanding clarifies the precise moment worth acting upon. True strategy begins in this discipline: the capacity to see farther than others, to sense the forces already gathering below the surface, and to recognize that sometimes the most powerful move is the one deliberately withheld.

The Card Players, 2026
by Tianhao @tianhaoart
Acrylic on canvas 50x70cm
Now available @artsy

At first glance, The Card Players shows two people sitting across from each other, each absorbed in their phone. A candle burns between them, suggesting intimacy and conversation, yet their attention seems elsewhere. It is a scene many of us recognize immediately.

The composition directly recalls Paul Cézanne’s The Card Players, but the game has moved with the times. Cézanne’s figures play cards across a table; here, the two figures appear to be playing the same game through their phones. The screen becomes the contemporary card table. The figure in white glances sideways as if to say, “I’m watching you,” while the figure in red seems to answer, “I know.” Their competition is still mutual and immediate, but the exchange now happens through screens and peripheral glances.

The painting suggests that technology has changed the form of human interaction more than it has changed our underlying instincts. We still compete, observe, bluff, anticipate, and try to read the person across from us. Cézanne’s players held their cards in their hands. These players hold phones. The game, in many ways, remains the same. The tools may change, but human nature does not change nearly as much. We are still drawn to one another, still guarded, still curious, and still trying to understand the person sitting across the table.

The Sun We Make, 2026
by Tianhao @tianhaoart
50x50 cm Acrylic on canvas
Now available @artsy

Most of us know what it feels like to wait for something outside ourselves to change: for better circumstances, for another person to meet us halfway, or simply for a difficult period to pass.

Tianhao remembers being a child, standing in a dark room with a flashlight and imagining the circle of light on the wall as his own sun. Outside, night had already fallen; with the small source of light in his hand, he could make a sun appear.

In The Sun We Make, that childhood gesture becomes the central idea of the painting. The sun above belongs to the world outside us: the light offered by circumstance, opportunity, love, recognition, or fortune. But those sources are never guaranteed. There are moments when the landscape around us remains dark, and waiting for it to brighten is not enough.

The light rising from the water proposes another possibility. Instead of searching only for a source of light outside ourselves, we can begin with whatever remains in our own hands and turn it into a source of light. A decision, an act of courage, a piece of work, a conviction, a gesture of care, even the smallest reason to continue can become the beginning of that light. The sun we make does not replace the one in the sky. It is the light we generate from within when the light beyond us cannot be reached.

When the world does not give us a sun, what can we make with the light already in our hands?
