Meet the Certina DS 5601-112: a seriously rare 1960s piece, and (in my opinion) the best dial configuration - beautifully aged and radium-loaded ☢️. Honestly… who needs an Explorer if you’ve got this? 😉

The Certina’s DS (“Double Security”) concept is a toughness-focused construction launched in 1959 that made these watches proper “go anywhere” machines.
These watches even went on adventures like the 1960 Dhaulagiri expedition in the Himalayas.

Finally I’m now also part of the cool Certina Club — thanks to @the.vintage.collector 🐢✨
This one is staying — not for sale.

The Albishorn Type 10 has finally made its way to my wrist — in a configuration that’s truly one of a kind (can you spot my „piece-unique“ modifications?). At just the right dimensions, it strikes a perfect balance between vintage charm and modern execution.

The standout is the Sihlwald dial, a deep, textured emerald green named after the nature reserve next to the Albishorn. Paired with a warm bronze crown and the unmistakable red monopusher for the chronograph, it feels both rugged and refined.

I’m grateful to be able to add this piece to my collection — and I’m certain it will see plenty of wrist time. Even the packaging deserves a mention: it feels like something ordered in the first half of the 20th century and delivered straight into the future.

Chapeau to Sébastien @albishorn_watches for having the courage to launch such a special brand in challenging times for the watch world. With the incredible Marinagraph already making waves (pun intended), I can’t wait to see what’s next…

A Watch with a Story. 🇬🇧🎖️

This rare Marvin Pilot watch from the 1940s once belonged to Lt.-Col. Philip Henry Cooper, a British Army engineer officer whose career spanned the turbulent decades between the World Wars and the height of WWII and whose name as well as Personal Service Number are engraved on its back.

Commissioned in 1927, Cooper served as a technical instructor, trained future Army engineers at Chepstow, and later served in Egypt and Sudan as the British maintained their strategic presence across the Middle East and Africa. During the Second World War he rose through the ranks of the newly formed Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (REME), becoming a senior staff officer.

Unlike front-line commanders whose names filled newspapers, officers like Cooper were part of the vast technical and logistical network that kept the British Army moving during the war.

This Marvin accompanied him through troopship voyages, military schools, divisional headquarters, and a world at war.

I was quite surprised that i not only was able to snatch this up but also was able to track down P.H.Coopers great-nephew Dave who is still holding onto his great-uncles uniforms and service records. 🎖️

Lt.-Col. Philip Henry Cooper, REME
Army No. P/37766
Born: Brightlingsea, Essex – 7 December 1898

Movado Celestograf, Favre & Perret 18k gold case, late 40s early 50s

This Movado Celestograf is a perfect example of why I believe vintage Movado still offers some of the most fascinating value in the world of collecting tough it has gotten harder to find good deals.

A beautifully complicated timepiece featuring a full calendar, moonphase and small seconds, housed in an 18k gold case made by the manufacture Favre & Perret - a prestigious casemaker whose craftsmanship graced watches from Patek Philippe and Vacheron.

And then there are those gorgeous flame lugs, the unusual gold hourglass (or Vajra-shaped) applied indices, and of course, that wonderfully smoky dial.

Now, I know patina can be a divisive subject among collectors, but personally, I absolutely love it when it develops evenly and actually adds something to a watch. After all, what makes vintage watches so fascinating if not the little traces of their individual histories?

Here, the smoky patina gives the dial an almost antique, mysterious appearance that works beautifully with those unusual golden indices.

So, what’s your take? Are you a patina lover or a mint-condition purist?

Tudor Ranger II ref. 9111 - 1970s

As you may have seen from my stories, this watch basically hasn’t left my wrist for several days now.

Introduced during Tudor/Rolex‘s experimental era, it took off in a completely different direction with a design language that sits somewhere between toolwatch and luxury sports watch.

What makes this early configuration especially interesting is how rare it seems to be. The first production run appears to date to around early 1974, with mostly classic Ranger-style dials 6-9-12 numerals, arrow hands, and black or blue dial variants. According to the serial ranges identified by Goldammer, total Ranger II production may not even have exceeded 2,000 pieces!

While the Tudor North Flag is often described as the modern spiritual successor, I honestly find the Ranger II much more interesting as a possible early design playground for ideas that later appeared in Rolex’s angular integrated-bracelet era (Notably the Landweller).

What I find funny is how polarising the Ranger II still is. Some people love it, some people hate it and somehow it still hasn’t fully caught the boom that collectible Tudors and vintage Rolexes have seen. But with this much personality, rarity, and historical weirdness, I don’t think it will take too long before it finds its rightful place on the collector podium.

Side note: I’ve now accepted that I apparently have a serious attraction to 70s sports watches. There’s always this little hint of exaggerated luxury even in watches that are clearly trying to be tooly.

Wittnauer Electro-Chron, 1960s ⚡

On its own, a working, early Wittnauer Electro-Chron is already hard to find. But in almost mint condition, with its original bracelet, tags, and box? Basically impossible! A true electric grail, I simply had to snatch up!

The Electro-Chron belongs to that fascinating early-1960s moment when the watch world was experimenting with the future. Before quartz took over, brands were searching for the next big thing and Wittnauer, then part of Longines, used a battery-powered electro-mechanical system, (Landeron 4750). In other words: not quite mechanical, not yet quartz but a wonderfully strange little bridge between two eras.

NFS - Private collection for now.

Movado “Calatrava” extra-flat, 1950s ✨

A very rare and uncommon extra-flat Movado from the golden era of the brand.

Slim hand-wound case, light ivory bullseye dial, and beautiful applied indices with refined elegance you usually associate with gentleman’s dress watches from houses like Vacheron.

Before Movado became mostly known for the Museum Watch, the brand was a serious Swiss manufacture with real watchmaking depth: elegant cases, excellent in-house calibres, clever design, and a catalogue full of watches that collectors are eager to rediscover.

It has become increasingly hard to come across good vintage Movados- honest, elegant, well-proportioned examples with real character. Since dress watches are not too much up my alley, this one is up for grabs.
Fully serviced & ready to go!

Enicar Sherpa GMT

If the Enicar Steward / Stewardess was made for the cabin crew, I like to imagine the Captain up front was wearing one of these in the late 50s

This is an early and rarer Sherpa GMT variant, still without the later Rubyrotor movement. The contrasting GMT bezel gives it that proper travel-watch energy, while the silvery-white dial has aged beautifully into a soft champagne tone. Add the honest patina and the bold sherpa compressor case and you get a watch that feels ready for departure.

A little aviation fantasy, some toolwatch practicality, and a lot of Enicar charm.

LIP Calipso 200 🇫🇷

Another iconic French diver has washed ashore.

The LIP Calipso 200 is practical, clever and a bit funky. Around 1968–1971, LIP created this 200m diver following a meeting between Fred Lip and Jacques Cousteau, with the name clearly nodding to Cousteau’s legendary research vessel, Calypso.

Long before Swatch made “affordable plastic” cool and long before everyone started saying bioceramic with a straight face, LIP was already putting proper dive watches into lightweight cases.

Sold: 70s Baylor GMT “Antarctic”

As always, what interests me most about collecting watches are the individual brand and model histories. Strange little connections and (mostly) forgotten names.

Baylor is exactly one of those names. Originally the private-label watch brand of American jeweller Zales, Baylor offered Swiss-made watches under its own name often using serious suppliers like Heuer or Nivada or designs closely connected to other brands.

That’s where it gets really interesting: Baylor watches often shared cases, parts, or manufacturing DNA. So while the dial might say Baylor, the story behind it often leads straight into the same Swiss toolwatch world collectors are chasing today.

This Baylor GMT is a perfect example: a very niche, very rare collector’s piece with all the right ingredients probably made by Nivada in the early 70s for Baylor as a private label Antarctic.

And since I have to reduce the collection a bit, this one is also for sale. Be quick!

Eterna-Matic 3003 silver “Maze Dial”

I might be especially lucky with rare maze and geometric dials… or maybe they’ve simply started following me home.

After finding the Universal Genève White Shadow with its incredible blue maze dial, I naturally started looking for others in the same spirit - and then this Eterna-Matic 3003 appeared. Safe to say, the similarity is too strong to ignore. I wouldn’t be surprised if the same dial manufacturer was behind both.

A maze dial from Universal Genève was already rare enough…

finding one on an Eterna 3003 feels like the plot thickening - a destiny so to say

Ornata Oversize Square — 1970s

Sometimes the best finds are the ones you absolutely don’t plan.

I found this little gem completely randomly while walking home, sitting in a jeweller’s showcase among new, unused watches from the 1970s, one of those moments where you stop, stare and think: Well… that wasn’t on today’s schedule.

Not much seems to be known about Ornata. The only real clue I found is that the name appears as a Swiss trademark linked to Rodania, registered in 1949.

Oversized square case, Roman numerals, and a textured black dial that gives it kind of a elegant but weird 1970s character I love.

Hard to find something in this style especially in this condition nowadays.
