Tourette syndrome: ‘It’s shaped who I am today’

Wilamena Dyer @tictasticlife is a musician who lives with Tourette syndrome.

It’s estimated that over 300,000 children and adults in the UK are living with the condition, which causes sudden, repetitive sounds or movements, known as tics.

As a new film, I Swear, hits cinema screens, Wilamena told @bbcnuala about her experiences and why she wanted to be an advocate, to raise awareness, debunk stereotypes and help others with Tourette syndrome.

The film is inspired by John Davidson’s experiences, from a young man with a misunderstood condition, to becoming an advocate for others.

Struggling to believe that we’ve made it to the half way point of my degree!! Still such a baffling thought

This does mean that it’s time for a bit of a late 3rd term of 2nd yr photo round up! With a fab term of classes and making it through exams mostly unscathed I’m very much enjoying some sun, beach and recharge time before it’s inevitably time to start third year! (Wild I know!!)

Neupulse Diaries Episode 3: Tourettes and Neupulse Vs Train journey!

Decided to try experimenting with using my @neupulse device on a much longer train journey for the first time. Public transport has always been something that I struggle with and have unfortunately had some pretty bad experiences with reactions and comments about my tics while travelling, so any longer journey like this does usually bring up a bit of anxiety for me.

Although this ended up being a rather long and delayed journey, it turned out to be an excellent train ride overall as it was so empty. This meant I immediately felt more comfortable and able to tic without feeling too stressed or like the whole world was watching me. It also made it the perfect environment to navigate trialling and testing using my Neupulse without feeling too much pressure around feeling desperate for my tics to calm down.

I definitely didn’t have the device switched on the whole time as I’m still currently trying to take it slowly and build up gradually. To be completely open and honest, personally I have still been finding using the device to be a little overwhelming at times so am making sure I don’t overdo it and only use it when I feel it is going to help me manage or have a positive impact for me in a certain situation. I want to make sure I’m not wearing it to make others feel more comfortable or because I feel I shouldn’t be ticcing. Instead focusing on what’s best for me in the moment.

Having said that, it definitely made me feel more calm and confident on the train which is a huge step and can see it definitely being a useful tool to have and use as and when I think it would help.

I have so much love and respect for this man. From seeing him struggle on the stage at Glasto because of his tics to seeing him come back even stronger singing so beautifully about the darkness and struggles he’s faced. Yet another reminder that anything is possible 🩷 Also not Lewis getting emotional on stage and then saying “Here’s a song about me dying. I hope you like it” lol

This week I received a very exciting parcel which I’ve been looking forward to for what feels like forever!

If you’ve seen the film “I Swear” (@johndavidsonmbe ) then you might recognise the device featured in these photos.

This is my new @neupulse device!!! To start with I just want to say that I’m aware that it’s such a privilege to be able to own this device as I know it isn’t financially possible for many. This is a wearable device which has been found to help reduce tics in those with Tourette’s Syndrome by using median nerve stimulation.

This is a very exciting new chapter and a first of its kind which I’m looking forward to exploring and experimenting with. I feel it’s going to be a lot of trial and error of how the device can be used to benefit my day to day life overall. The possibility that this may give me back a tiny bit of control over my own life, body and brain is something that I’ve never had and never thought I’d get either. I’m going into this with a very open mind to not put pressure or expectations on the effects it may have on my tics as it’s all still so unknown.

A huge disclaimer about this is that I want to make sure it’s VERY CLEAR that just because this device is being released, it doesn’t mean that all members of the tic community will want to try it or use it. Living with tics isn’t always a negative and there should in no way be any pressure for people to stop ticcing whether that be through suppression, taking medication, or now by using this device. It’s such a personal thing and each individual will have different feelings about it. I know I wouldn’t want my tics to be entirely taken away as it is a fundamental part of who I am.

However, I’m excited to try and experiment using it in different contexts of my life as a potential tool in the toolkit.

I’m going to try and document my experiences and journey while I start using Neupulse and the honest truths about the big questions, thoughts and emotions that arise with it.

Today, the 7th of June, marks Tourette’s Syndrome Awareness day 2026!

Today is a day to celebrate all those who tic and remind ourselves why education, understanding and awareness around this condition is so important!

I have also found myself reflecting today of all the times I thought that life was impossible because of my tics. How many times I have proved doctors wrong who told me I would never be successful, lead any kind of normal life and definitely not make it through school let alone thrive at uni. Feeling pretty grateful right about now xx

It’s a day to be proud of any and all achievements no matter how big or small. A day to appreciate the better day to day awareness of Tourettes but also despite this progress just how much further we need to go and how much more needs to be done.
