48 hours in Berlin The frantic beeping you can hear in the second slide from @aiww’s page is me desperately trying to change the time on my digicam before taking a photo of Weiwei after our interview. I wasn’t particularly bothered by him taking a video of me because A. He’d told me he’d do so and B. I’d read that everyone who passes through the studio doors gets the same treatment. But I was bothered by the false date on my tiny digi screen. Other than it looking unprofessional on the @thefacemagazine website, for some reason it also felt a bit like no one would believe the image. Like this piece of ancient (sorry, millennials) technology that predated the fake news era, would be incapable of lying - that somehow, people would say that the image was taken on a different day, at a different time simply because the screen said so. You can tell by the image how far I got. But in a small way, that’s partly what Wei Wei’s latest piece, “Three Perfectly Proportioned Spheres and Camouflage Uniforms Painted White”, is about. On show now at Pavilion 13 in Kyiv, the piece asks whether seeing means believing and looks at the tensions that arise when what was once rational becomes irrational, and grand narratives that used to convey order and logic are replaced with lies and chaos (okay, formal end to the camera metaphor). Over the course of our conversation, there’s little that Weiwei and I didn’t touch on, a pensive and intelligent interviewee there was no such thing as a question too big to answer. Last year @raye brought down the house at @montreuxjazzfestival, dedicating her set to her Swiss grandpa Michael. This year she returned to open the festival on a bespoke stage alongside @iammarkronson , @aliciakeys and her sisters @amma and @the.absolutely. Between rehearsals and the big performance, I got a chance to catch up with the South Londoner backstage to talk about @audemarspiguet, her family and her advice for artists looking to follow in her footsteps. Back in the winter of 2024, it felt like I cried every day for weeks. I’d lost out on my dream internship and I couldn’t think about working anywhere else. Try as I might, I couldn’t move on. Come April, a few months later, I reached back out to @m_j_whitehouse and @brooke_mccord, hoping and praying that they’d consider having me again. This time, my prayers were answered. What followed were two years of giggles, interviews, flights, cups of tea and a masterclass in meaningful, irreverent writing. It was also the most supportive, kind environment I’ll probably ever work in.Thank you for believing in me and showing me what it’s like to put your whole heart into something, there’s nothing like @thefacemagazine because there’s nothing like this team: @m_j_whitehouse, @craigmclean00, @olivepometsey, @jadewickes, @infinite____jess, @_davyreed, @carmenfribbinswork, @eniitay, @alexa.venuss, @merlebutcher, @josephdbobowicz and everyone who contributed to this brilliant magazine.
