Not much has changed. How do I know? Because I work with families like this every single day.

Soon to be Dr. Isabella Wise tells her story of being pushed out of MCPS and how @donchancleta787 saved her life… literally. They are with Montgomery County Street Outreach Network. Watch the full video from The State of Mid-County Communities Summit at https://youtu.be/-UQ_jZZgUaA?is=OGsal4WXsk4PoihC.

All I can think about is what if?

Our school district has not kept up with the educational needs of its community. It is still functioning as the Montgomery County of the past. Too many Black and non-native English speaking children cannot read.

Our children are being failed and we should be up in arms that they take our money and do not deliver year after year. #mcps #montgomerycounty #montgomeryvillage #gaithersburg #rockville taken in Montgomery Village, Maryland by @tiffanyisrunning

If Black people are at the top, what is the problem? @zsj__40 co-founder and co-executive director of @racialjusticenow talks about her work and why she does it.

Many of the “Top Dogs” in leadership are Black in Montgomery County, MD. Elected officials, county, government directors, the Black who’s who occupy the top spaces.

Yet, only 38% of Black children are reading on grade level. Half of the defendants in our court system are Black. Black boys are 87% of those in juvenile detention centers. 50% of those counted as homeless last year were Black men.

No public outcry. Black people don’t matter.

The data tells it all but there is no targeted intervention geared to the Black experience in Montgomery County. #blackexperience #montgomerycountymd #gaithersburg #rockville #montgomeryvillage taken in Gaithersburg, Maryland by @tiffanyisrunning

What does it mean to be Black in Montgomery County? At the State of Mid-County Communities Summit, we made space for experiences that countywide averages can hide. Listen to what our neighbors shared.

Hillside residents have spoken. Now the City must act.

Marine veteran Leo Thompson, president of the Hillside Senior Tenant Association, testified about safety and housing conditions at Hillside Senior Living. He identified MRK Partners as the property owner.

The community is home to seniors, including people with disabilities, many living on very low incomes. Residents have repeatedly raised concerns. The City has been notified. The City Code must be enforced, with citations and the sanctions needed to secure compliance.

It’s estimated Hillside could generate about $2.6 million a year in gross rent at full occupancy. That is an estimate, not profit. Residents deserve safe conditions and a clear timeline for action.

Watch and share his testimony.

I appreciated the opportunity to attend the State of Mid-County Communities Summit at Quince Orchard High School, hosted and moderated by Tiffany Kelly.

One thing continues to stand out to me: we need to do a better job of listening to our young people. They are bright, connected, informed, and deserve a meaningful voice in the decisions that affect them.

The same is true for the Black and Brown communities we advocate for. My job is to listen to all voices, understand their experiences, and work toward policies that can have the greatest positive impact on our students, families, educators, and community.

My councilmembers made me proud today. In today’s special hearing, the health and human services commission voted unanimously on a special appropriation that will help to find programming at @recmodefitness. Miss folks, this is a family run business that deeply invest in the youth of our community and they don’t turn one of them away. Ever. We need to expand this program from downtown county to Up County. Thank you, Coach Dave, momma Maxine, and all the staff who keep showing up for these kids. #recmodeworldwide loading soon. taken in Rockville, Maryland by @tiffanyisrunning
