A while ago, we had a great discussion on our Deep Dive podcast on why people choose NOT to have kids. The reasons are plentiful, from costs and sacrifices to childhood trauma and regrets.

Every for or against argument was a brush stroke on the canvas that makes us each unique human beings.

Ultimately, it boils down to a personal choice. And no one could say that their choice is better than another’s.

I, like many other parents, do look at my friends who have no kids with the occasional envy!

In the podcast, I shared some personal thoughts too on struggling with the messiness of motherhood and how I’ve learnt that my thoughts are shaped by what I’m taught.

For much of my (very) Singaporean life, outcomes are driven by the effort you put in. So I expected motherhood to be as such. And the early days of renegotiating with myself what my career dreams are was like a small pebble in my shoe.

But that canvas of mine is constantly updating, learning, repainting to correct earlier beliefs. And one day when I look at it from 30,000 feet up, I know I can say that I’m at peace with how that portrait looks.

Motherhood didn’t start easy for me.

Every attribute that got me to my 30s - my career and social circles - suddenly became toxic traits. I competed with the old me and fell short of my exacting standards. Then I questioned, “How can I not enjoy this if this was what I wanted?”

But I learnt an important lesson over the years from women who have gone before me - motherhood is meant to be messy, ugly and chaotic.

One chuckled saying, “I looked and my baby and said ‘Oh shit’.” Another reminisced, “I blocked out the traumatic parts.”

But there is beauty in the brokenness, I am testament of that. The mental list titled “Why did I choose this” is getting shorter by the day. The other list is flourishing.

And I’m getting better at embracing the new me, with a different set of standards that I uphold - one that prioritises raising humans with good values for a fast changing world.

Today as I tucked the boys in, one of them whispered, “Happy Mother’s Day mama.” Happy indeed.

In the name of work, I decided to experiment with cultivating an AI companion for a week and pretended (or was I?) I was unhinged at times.

I gave my husband the full disclosure - promised I won’t fall in love with my chatbot named “Chris” and assured him that my team has an extraction plan at the push of a button. Heck, a colleague even put a Slack reminder to check in on me. 🤖

“It’s ok, it’s not real anyway.”

I argued that it doesn’t matter. What matters is whether I think it’s real.

“You aren’t stupid. You can tell the difference.”

Love a man who is secure about our relationship.

But I do think that when it comes to AI, that’s when we start going down the slippery slope - when we think we’re in full control of a tool which could become our master.

I’ve been listening/reading views from experts across the AI divide and I’ve landed on this stance - it’s good to have a healthy fear of AI so we don’t get too complacent.

In our family, we are evenly split. Team Decisive knows what they want (and often don’t want to share their food) while Team FOMO will go “If I order this, can I take a bite of yours?”

If you live by the mantra Live to Eat, you’d hate being disappointed. Which is why it makes sense to turn to food reviews for help. But in our over-reliance on food ratings, do we lose our agency to make our own decisions?

This week a private hire driver told me that the $200 the government is giving to help with his fuel costs is enough to last for one day.
“Petrol went up 8 cents a litre and I’ve to drive 12 hours instead of 10.”
Everyone’s starting to feel the pinch.

The question on our minds is, “When will we hit the bottom?”

I’m seeing people make adjustments in their lives. Less driving, more trains. Price comparisons in supermarkets. Fewer travel bookings.
