I am honored to be among those chosen for induction by the WBC Legends on June 22. Thank you Rudy @mouthpiecedoctor and the entire WBC @wbcboxing family for recognizing my life in boxing. In fact, boxing has been my life since I witnessed The Rumble in the Jungle from a small tv in the courtyard of our apartment building, together with all the neighborhood.From that moment on I wanted to become like Ali; a champion who danced in the ring, entertaining the public. Boxing taught me the fundamentals both inside and outside of the ring,skills which remain with me to this day: consistency to achieve goals, to control my emotions under stressful conditions, to never give up, to believe in myself no matter what happens and to enjoy the journey, not just the destination. These are the skills that helped me to navigate boxing and life when I moved to Los Angeles, so far from my loving extended family in Nigeria,headlining at the Forum one fight, and having my next fight stopped 10 seconds before the final bell to prevent my win.
Being chosen for this honor brings me back to thoughts of my 1st coaches Dirisu and Ikuoria who gave me my foundation and love for our sport. They remain in my life to this day. And my beloved late coach Bill Slayton here at Broadway gym, who is with me every day as I guide my own son, a professional boxer and my talented group of amateurs. And of course my family: thinking of my proud late parents,my late 1st wife Patrica and daughter Joy, my older son CJ so far in Australia. And my 2nd wife Elizabeth, who supports me in everything , and my younger son Emeka, who gives me the joy and challenge of being his coach as he joins our ranks as a real contender in the super welter division.
Being recognized amongst a group of champs like this is a dream come true and I feel the same elation that I felt the 1st time I stepped into a ring as a boy and won my first fight.
