PAVEL — 04 SEPTEMBER 2026

I have known Pavel for many years, and over time we have crossed paths countless times — at parties, events and gatherings within Brussels’ queer community. We have also worked together before, so photographing him for my Queer Brussels Portrait project felt like a very natural choice.

Pavel moves between many different forms of creative expression and is a familiar presence in Brussels’ nightlife and queer scene. His photographic work explores the male body and sexuality, while his involvement in the fetish scene, music and nightlife brings him into contact with many different facets of the queer community.

What made me want to photograph Pavel was not simply everything he does, but the way he brings all these different parts of himself together — with kindness, curiosity and a genuine love for art and community.

Pavel is queer, an artist, a photographer and a DJ, moving between photography, music, nightlife and different forms of queer expression. In many ways, he represents the diversity, creativity and visibility of the community that I have been photographing and documenting for more than a decade.

I was not lost, I was just broken

This past year has probably been one of the hardest years of my life.

I went through burnout, and eventually I was diagnosed with chronic depression and PTSD. I tried several different antidepressants, went through periods when simply getting through the day felt like an achievement, and had to learn — sometimes the hard way — that mental health is something we cannot keep putting aside.

But somewhere in the middle of all of this, something unexpected happened.

I started to understand myself.

I started to understand who I am, what I want, and where I want to go. I realised that being an artist is not just something I do — it is a huge part of who I am. Photography, queer art, creating, observing, expressing things that are difficult to put into words — this is where I feel like myself.

Going through this difficult period forced me to slow down and look at my life from a different perspective. It made me accept parts of myself that I had been avoiding, and it made me realise that finding yourself is not always a beautiful or easy process. Sometimes you have to lose your way completely before you can understand where you actually want to go.

I feel like I’m entering a new chapter now.

I don’t have everything figured out. But for the first time in a long time, I have a much clearer sense of who I am and why I am here.

I also want to say thank you to everyone who stayed close to me during this period. To those who listened, checked in, helped, understood, gave me space when I needed it, or simply stayed around. You probably don’t realise how much that meant to me.

And this is also a little reminder: mental illness is serious. It deserves attention, care and treatment. There is no shame in asking for help, taking medication, going to therapy, or admitting that you are not okay.

Take care of yourselves. Take care of each other.

And if you are somewhere in the middle of your own difficult chapter — maybe you haven’t lost yourself. Maybe you are still in the process of finding yourself.
