YouTube was my main resource when I first started.

From “How does a camera work?” to “How do I get that film look?”

It’s been a long, long journey.
But more than worth it.
So grateful for it all.

Along the way, I learned the hard way that you learn so much faster from and with people who share your vision and dedication.

When you find those people, keep them close and keep pushing each other.

This is the way.

My art teacher was always a little desperate with me.

I couldn’t hold a brush properly, and my handwriting is still absolute sh*t.

But I always loved art, so I kept looking for my own way into it.

I found it through photography and film. It gave me a way to express what was in my head.

I believe everyone has their own form of art.

Sometimes you just have to stay curious long enough to find it.

Growing up, I heard the same advice over and over.

Get a stable job.
Play it safe.
Go to film school first.

The problem was:
my grades weren’t good enough to get in.

So I took a different path.

I found mentors.
I spent countless hours on YouTube.
I studied the work of people who were already where I wanted to be.

The best part about starting today is that access has never been easier.

The cameras are affordable.
The knowledge is online.
The barrier to entry is lower than ever.

Nobody in my family worked in this industry.
Nobody could show me the way.

So I built my own.

If you’re waiting for permission, a degree, or the perfect moment, you might be waiting forever.

Start where you are.
Learn from anyone who’s ahead of you.
Keep going.

You’d be surprised how far that can take you.

Only obsessed people will make it in the industry.

As my all-time legend Werner Herzog said: the project stands above everything.

For me that always comes back to the craft. To the work. To the next project. To getting a little closer to what I already see in my head.

That’s probably why you can love film so much.

It’s emotional, but it’s also very precise. You don’t only think in images. You think in systems, rules and reasons.

Framing is more than just choosing a lens. Moving the camera is more than just movement. Color, design, location and angle all need to serve and support the story.

There is something really satisfying about creative decisions that have a reason behind them. When they support an idea, a feeling or a statement.

Because in film, almost every decision should be arguable.

And if you can’t argue why it’s there, there’s a good chance it shouldn’t be there.

As a hyperfocuser, there are these really intense phases where you deep dive into a new topic and everything else slowly moves into the background.

You learn, test, fail, adjust, try again, and at some point you can actually feel yourself and your work reaching a new level.

That feeling is hard to interrupt.

Even when your friends are texting you to come outside, have a BBQ, go to the pool or do anything else that would normally sound way more fun.

But when you’re that deep in the process, it doesn’t really feel like missing out.

And I love those phases when they happen, because I know they make my Films better and other phases will come again soon.

Your taste in the beginning
is usually ahead of your skill.

You know what you want it to feel like,
but when you make it,
it’s not quite there yet.

That gap can be frustrating.

But dedication means
you don’t let it stop you.

Project by project.
Try by try.

You close that gap
a little more.

And honestly,
there are not many things
that feel better
than seeing yourself grow
through your dedication.
