Kōjōshin (向上心 - ambition or aspiration) is the human heart fixed permanently skyward.

It is the hunger to improve that never switches off once the goal is reached.

Every mark you touch becomes hollow the instant you claim it. The promised satisfaction never arrives; a higher mark takes its place at once. You think this endless dissatisfaction is the flaw.

It is the most alive thing about you.

The upward heart does not arrive, because arriving is not its purpose. It faces higher ground the way a compass faces north - not as a destination to reach, but as the fixed direction that gives every step meaning.

The summit recedes at exactly your climbing pace. This is not mockery. It is the only condition under which a man keeps climbing. Hand him a peak he can summit, with nothing above it, and you have not rewarded him. You have ended him.

Kōjōshin is the knowledge that the ambition was never meant to end. This is why those who “arrive” are the ones who rot. Full satisfaction is indistinguishable from stopping. The man who finally feels he has made it has simply lost the faculty that moved him - and mistaken that loss for peace.

The dissatisfaction he tried to escape was the living part. A flame does not burn its fuel in order to reach some final, fireless rest. The burning is not a problem it is trying to solve. The moment it stops reaching upward, hungry for the next inch of air, it is no longer a flame. It is only smoke, ash, and the memory of heat.
