Still one of my favorites from Kyrgyzstan! 🇰🇬🙌🏼

Definitely a special one for me. As the sun was setting, we rushed up the steep slope behind our camp to make it for sunset 🌅 At 3000m of altitude, not the best idea but well worth the exhaustion. Wind was strong so I got out the drone very last minute. Still thinking of this evening from time to time. What a trip it was!:)

After our morning hike that day, we decided to keep driving on the nearby road, knowing it was a dead end but having no idea what to expect 👀

The mountain road winds up to almost 3,000m, with still lots of snow from the late winter in Georgia this year. Rockfall was everywhere, and a few times we had to get out of the car to clear the road. Not really the kind of place where you want to stop for too long 🚗

The temperature was close to 0°C at this altitude and after making it over the mountain pass, we had to manage the braking carefully on the way down so the discs wouldn’t overheat. And then the valley opened up beneath us 🏔️
What we found was one of the most stunning and nearly untouched valleys I have ever seen. Only around 10 people live there, and somehow we still came across a small guesthouse where we were invited in for dinner.

The weather changed constantly, from rain and clouds to completely clear skies. We spent the evening looking for a good spot to put up the tent and just enjoying how remote and quiet everything felt 🌦️

A dip in the ice-cold river, then back to the tent, tired from the day, and one of those really good nights of sleep with rain softly falling onto the tent 🏕️

Spent some time refining a few older frames 🎞️

These are from a summer 24‘ roadtrip taking us from Austria through Switzerland all the way to the french riviera. Good times, great memories with the best company.

Thought i‘d give these shots a new touch since my editing style has evolved quite a lot since then. I’ll probably be sharing a few more photos from this trip over the next weeks. Looking back on it feels pretty nostalgic. Some of my favorite shots were taken while camping at the foot of Mont Blanc with what was, at the time, my new camera: a used Sony A6300 paired with a pretty terrible lens.

One of the most remote places in Kyrgyzstan 🇰🇬

After driving for more than 8 hours on rough off-road tracks along the border with Kazakhstan, passing military checkpoints, lonely yurts, and horses, while the weather changed from sunshine to rain and back again, we weren’t sure if we’d make it before sunset.

Arriving in the dark would have made things much more difficult. Finding the right track would have been nearly impossible and the cold was creeping in fast at this altitude 🏔️

With just one hour of daylight to spare, we reached Ak-Tog Pass at 3,400m, overlooking the vast Sary-Jaz Valley below our feet and giving us the view of this valley for the first time. This mountain range is part of the Tian Shan, known as the “Celestial Mountains.” Standing there in the cold, looking at the 6000m peaks, many unclimbed, gives you this feeling of being the only human on earth in this exact moment.

We continued driving east into the valley, leaving the official tracks behind. Eventually, we pitched our tents with an incredible view of the Semenov Glacier, named after the Russian explorer who discovered it in 1857.

The weather wasn’t on our side. Low clouds kept creeping deeper into this immense valley, slowly swallowing the surrounding peaks. Still, I decided to fly the drone—a decision that resulted in some of the best photos I’ve ever taken 🙌🏼

Having spent a day exploring the ghost town of Engilchek deep in the Tian Shan mountains, we continued west into the Engilchek Valley. Before the trip, I had read about this place many times, Lake Merzbacher, the strange glacier lake that appears and disappears with the seasons, and far beyond it, Khan Tengri rising like a frozen pyramid at the end of the valley. Mountains this size have something special for me. They make you question everything and put so much into perspective. And still, I keep asking myself, what is it that pulls us to places like this, to climb something so much bigger than ourselves, and what, or who, are we trying to prove it to? 👀

On a previous trip in the nearby Sary Jaz Valley, we had heard helicopters echoing through the mountains, heading towards the high base camps in the ice. This was the reason we decided to come here. After leaving Engilchek, the road slowly turned into a rough track. Old Soviet remains, an abandoned airstrip, and massive valley walls closed in around us 🏔️
Just before sunset, we reached the old Khan Tengri base camp, now completely abandoned, its empty infrastructure left to the wind, harsh winters and time. We set up our tents nearby. As the sun set, the cold came in fast and we just sat under a star lit sky having a simple dinner before falling asleep 🌌
The next morning we pushed deeper into the valley. The terrain got rougher and as the car sank deeper into the sand, we decided to leave it behind and continued on foot, crossing rivers while seeing fresh bear tracks and rare plant species along the way 🌿

After a couple of hours, the valley opened up, and suddenly the Engilchek Glacier lay before us, massive and endless. We stood there in silence, unsure where to even pitch the tent in this sea of rock and sand. Heavy rain showers had started to develop behind us which we could not see hiking in an easterly direction 🌦️
