LIFE STILL BOUNCES.

A working title for a blog thing I'm going to do on here to help promote original live music & art & maybe some of the other things happening in Co Durham.
It seems to this Co Durham based art & music fan that due to the complexities & size & issues of this county it's hard to keep track of what's occurring & where. There's a lot going on but no one organization or group pulling it all together to help get the word out. This is just one man's attempt to try & do that a bit. I'll be working to the current county boundaries, not the historical ones, as those old bits of the county that now sit in Tyneside, Wearside and the Tees Valley are well covered publicity wise by various organizations and individuals. Current Co Durham isn't all that well in my view, at least not in coherent enough way perhaps. Maybe cos it's so big, so rural and so disparate. Anyway, here goes..

It will probably be little more than a monthly post around the beginning of each month about mainly art and music and what's coming up that I'm aware of so it won't be exhaustive & I'm happy to include anything anybody has got they want me to mention that fits. Just DM me on here please. Ta.

PHOTO is of East Durham band VICE KILLER who you really should check out.

@vice.killer 's debut album 'A Miner's Capital' is a great debut & they're just one example of what is going on in Co Durham. They headline Saturday night at this year's @durhambrass BRASSED ON offering at @gala_durham & yes I've already got a ticket.

Anyway, more later & I hope this idea will be of some help to Co Durham's original live music & art scene etc

The post title btw is a play on words of an event in Peterlee at the town's Central Club that happened in the summer of 2024 featuring music, film, performance, exhibition, a celebration of culture. It was called
LIFE JUST BOUNCES.

A day of showing pride in place & what's possible & shouldn't we all help to keep on working on that.

Last thing. A thanks to @billynomates_cowork @designbykinship @strike_collective @dispelart @build_cultr @nomorenowt & several others for giving me the kick up the .... my brain needed to try & get this off the ground. taken in Durham, Durham by @timdredge

BRUISER IN DARLO

Watching the cheating Saints take on Pompey on the tellybox.

Play Up Pompey!

Whilst buying November gig tix.
Buy those tix in advance kids. It helps the the bands & promoters.

My first November gig will be watching @bruisermusicuk @angelscutdarlington on Nov 7th.

That's them in the image.
A shout out for the Scots lad in the picture. Simon aka @pumplejuice

Not only is he 50%/ of Bruiser but he's also promoting music too. A sold out gig @theholygraledurham on Saturday and he's promoting @thestationeastgh too. Give pumplejuice a follow and go see Bruiser.

A shout out too for @stephen.gill13 and the great job he and his partner Catherine have done with @angelscutdarlington

So, Sat 7th Nov in Monte Darlo.
Local young uns @suspirium.band are doing one of the support slots.

Promises to be a really good gig.

Check out what Simon is up to both as a musician and as a promoter via the Bruiser and Pumplejuice socials. He's putting another gig on Friday 6th November at The Grale in Durham. I can't be there as Mrs D is out with the girls and I've got the dog but @zetapointband and @theeleopardprint are playing. Gutted I'm missing that.
Two excellent looking gigs.
Simon is a Co Durham resident these days. We're lucky to have him. by @timdredge

THAT WAS THE WEEK THAT WAS.

Grateful for a week that despite all the horrors on the world stage and the passing of people much closer to home that it included a trip to the Turner Prize, a trip to Horden Playhouse to see Ensemble 84 & some original live music too at my local Blues Club.

Life can be really tough at times but when it's also got art, theatre & music in it then life still has joy and light.

MY WEEK AHEAD.

A bit of a different one to one freelance folk on Insta sometimes post.

It starts here at Barnsley Crem. The wake is at the neighbouring garden centre which appealed to my friend's Sue's sense of fun and her message of always looking forward and being positive. Then it's back up to the Teesside postcodes for a gig in the Boro on the same day. Some light relief after waving off a woman I've known even longer than Mrs D.

Tuesday-another funeral. This time of our next door neighbour. He leaves behind his wife of 50 years. How heartbreaking is that...

Same day some brutal dental surgery.

Weds & Thursday. Some dental surgery recovery and family stuff.

Friday- a gig in Stockton
Saturday - a gig in Boro.

A different kind of week and hopefully after a run of half a dozen funerals in the last six weeks or so the last for a while.
Grief is truly exhausting. Glad there's live music to get me through. by @timdredge

ABOUT LAST NIGHT.

Wasn't expecting to be able to catch award-winning Finnish guitarist and blues artist extraordinaire Erja Lyytinen on her 50th Anniversary Rock Blues Birthday UK Tour but as things worked out I did.

Photo is by David Auton taken last night at Sedgefield Blues Club which happens monthly in our Parish Hall.

I hadn't seen her play since she opened for Robert Plant way back in the day about two decades ago.

Only an 8 day tour such is the cost of touring these days but she rocked up 5 minutes from my house. by @timdredge

WHAT NEXT FOR CAFE ETCH?

This place has helped plug a big gap in Middlesbrough's live music scence since both Base Camp Boro and The Westgarth closed in quick succession at the back end of 2022/early 2023.

Boro Gigs used it as one of three venues for their Arts Council funded programme which has just come to an end.
Mozzenjammer have their last gig there this Thursday.

NOTE: Both Boro Gigs and Mozzenjammer continue on. This post isn't about their end BUT after the Industrial Coast gig there this Monday I wonder when I'll be there for a gig again. It was my most attended venue last year. I can't see that happening again.

I'm hoping other promoters will continue to use the space and that the management team will work with the local music community to keep the place going.

Man and woman cannot live by bread alone.
We need music too.

DYSPRAXIA AWARENESS WEEK 12-18 OCT.

This image resonated with me as somebody who has lived with lifelong dyspraxia. I was that clumsy kid. It *did* feel like walls would get in my way. It still does sometimes. I was fortunate. My love of playing sport made me determined to learn movement patterns and relearn them and relearn them again. That made a difference. Track & field athletics maybe made the most difference in understanding how the body works, sometimes doesn't & how it can be controlled. It can still be hard & I still struggle with it. Back in the day there was no awareness of it. Now there is & sometimes therapies like occupational therapy can help. We need, however, more understanding and awareness.

Look out for more info on the web etc next week on Dyspraxia Awareness. by @timdredge

GIG GOALS/MORE LIVE MUSIC IN CHURCHES

This is St Margarets on Crossgate in Durham City.
I always think of Crossgate as Durham's music street.
Three of the street's hostelries are regular live music venues. News has reached me that the excellent @samslatchermusic is doing a Thursday lunchtime residency here for a bit and will be doing some of his own music and is inviting others to join him.
Will I be going along to have a listen at some point? Certainly will. Sam has contributed a great deal to the Co Durham music scene already and deserves our support. St Margarets is also a gorgeous space. Great to see it being used like this.

I understand the arrangement that Sam is doing is a chaplaincy residency helping promote the arts. Whay a wonderful idea. by @timdredge

STACKED OFF/HACKED OFF.

Frankly no surprise but what a waste of time the whole STACK misadventure in Durham City has been.
They had an eye on making money largely off the large student population in Durham but eventually realised having most of your potential customers around for only 30 weeks of the year isn't a sustainable model. The * going out* market in Durham City isn't what it used to be with rising costs for food, drink and transport restricting the disposable income amongst the locals.

I had hoped it might work and provide a place to play for local young uns and others but no it's been a complete waste of time. It's too small a place to be stacked and too beautiful too.

Time to move the eyesore on and put something useful in it's place.

To add insult to injury STACK hadn't even told the council they were pulling out before the news broke.

Then there's the STACK development at Bish Vegas. How STACK ever thought that was viable in Bishop Auckland is mind blowing. It isn't and never will be.

All this means that STACK won't have a presence in Co Durham but maybe that's a good thing and an appropriate situation.

BREWDOG aren't coming either after the Milburngate development plans fell apart. Another part of the city an unfinished project.

Time for a reset for the County's capital perhaps. by @timdredge

AN EP LAUNCH IN A RECORDING STUDIO.

This evening's entertainment is in a back street recording studio.

It's an EP launch in the very place the EP was recorded.

Rocking Horse Recording & Rehearsal Rooms had to leave Durham City a couple of years back. Cast out by gentrification and overdevelopment. They found a new home in Coxhoe, a village halfway between where I live and Durham. Things are going well and sometimes they put gigs on in their intimate space.

A fiver for three bands including the excellent Co Durham band Bastardface.
I've not seen the other two bands before.

What's not to like.
