Review: Grim Tidings

OK I REALLY ENJOYED THIS ONE!! ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป๐Ÿฉท

This was the perfect cozy October romance ๐ŸŽƒ It was fast paced, cute, heartwarming, hot, funny, filled with tension and overall chef's kiss.

I loved the chemistry, I loved the banter, and I absolutely adored Darcy and Gabriel, both together and as individual characters.

Darcy is a grim reaper and Gabriel is a guardian angel. One takes lives, while the other protects them. They're literally on opposite ends of the spectrum, and I DON'T KNOW HOW IT WORKS, BUT IT DOES. ๐Ÿ˜ญ

What surprised me most, though, was how much more layered this story was than I initially expected. Beneath all the romance, humour, and swoon worthy moments, it also explored grief, loneliness, loss, and death in such a beautiful and tender way.

And oh, the way this book spoke about death and what it could mean for us.. It was unexpectedly comforting and I loved how it was portrayed with so much warmth and heart.

10/10 WOULD RECOMMEND!!

Thank you to @times.reads & @dezziray_ for this crazy ARC I can't believe I get to hold and keep ๐Ÿฉท๐Ÿฅน taken in BOOKSTA by @times.reads

wow. having recently read โ€œtaiwan travelogueโ€, this is another W O W book that left me feeling all the goosebumps after the very last word.

beginning, middle, end follows a mother-daughter pair road tripping in italy post a divorce. throughout their journey, as they are on a personal mission to return the proteus mosaic to its rightful place, the mother navigates on beginning again and at the same time, she worries about how her 12 year old daughter will navigate hers. I especially like how as we witness as much as the mother is trying her best to provide the life for her child, the daughter is also trying her best to help her mother.

majority of the book reads like a diary entry of the motherโ€™s scattered thoughts that seemingly has no conclusion however it is so layered and compelling. it is so beautifully written it invites us to think about the broader questions in life specifically on time, family, and starting over.

I picked this up at the Times book buffet as I have a thing for mother-daughter narrative and I rly enjoyed this. I love the writing style (minus all the mythology) and all quotes are ๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿ’—. this largely isnโ€™t a plot driven story but it is very introspective which I like.

spoiler: (more for me to rmb~)

I thought that the book is somewhat the motherโ€™s autofiction but the mindblown moment of it all was the last chapter when the daughter writes the ending chapter, revealing the entire plot thru her pov. I like that switch and it was then that I realise the author of this book is in fact the daughter instead of the mother. super luv the postcards and polaroid pictures attached at the end of the book too. :^))

ty @times.reads @harper_reach @harpercollinsinternational for the arc !!

Growing up, three sisters; Mutiara, Maya, and Annisa faced constant conflict, fueled by their fatherโ€™s favoritism toward Annisa and their grandmother Nana Victoriaโ€™s uncanny predictions. Years later, a now-married Annisa (and her husband) stuns her family by detonating a s**cide ๐Ÿ’ฃ at a religious gathering. As her shocked sisters struggle to make sense of the tragedy, Nanaโ€™s haunting prophecy echoes back: Mutiara is The Caretaker, Maya is The Traveler, and Annisa is The Bride.

The 3๏ธโƒฃ Things:

The story of Annisaโ€™s family using explosives to kill worshippers was inspired by the real-life 2018 Surabaya s**cide ๐Ÿ’ฃ . What makes it so heartbreaking is that the perpetrator even brought along their children, and one of them was only 2yo. Besides, political reckoning in the government system, the differences between Sulaimanโ€™s and Rohadiโ€™s family, and itโ€™s crazy how people can hurt one another while believing theyโ€™re the better ones.

A grandmother obsessed with prophecy, a chronically ill mother, a biased father, and a fractured sisterhood make up the core conflicts of the book. Even though itโ€™s a slow burn, the horror hits incredibly hard because itโ€™s rooted in real events, packed with eerie elements like the whispering well, the kuntilanak lingering near it, and the way the sisters see their deceased little sister. It really set the vibe for my spooky October reads. As for the theme of identity, Rohadiโ€™s storyline is so heartbreaking.

This is the one question that has lingered with me long after finishing the book. Sometimes, our deepest expectations and emotional investments in others are simply left unreciprocated. In the relentless pursuit of our own desires, we often overlook, or intentionally turn a blind eye to the needs of those around us. Unbeknownst to them, every character succumbs to this quiet tragedy as they inevitably drift apart. To me, this was the most heartbreaking realization of all.

books I read recently courtesy of @times.reads!!! i read so many books these days itโ€™s time to whip out the mini-reviews ๐Ÿ“šโœ๐Ÿป

the highlight of my recent reads have got to be The Seoul Letter Shop by Baek Seungyeon โ€” you know how much i love cosy fiction!! but even more so, i love books about letters or emails (think: Apartment - Rainbow Rowell, The Correspondent - Virginia Evans) and this Korean healing fiction version of an epistolary style book really hit the spot. i definitely recommend this if you love writing letters or have always seen the appeal in it but donโ€™t know where to start! ๐Ÿ’Œ

the next best would be The Sixth Faction by @veronicaroth! captivating, illuminating, gripping, incredible, BUT WHY IS IT NOT IN ONE BOOK ๐Ÿ˜ญ in this economy, the joys of being able to finish a great story in one book are few and far in between SIGH. but itโ€™s fine, itโ€™s good enough that i WILL wait and read the next one. (no more than two please Iโ€™m begging you.)

thank you @times.reads @jjjamieee for the wonderful reads as always!!! Iโ€™m had fun making this mini review format and there will be more to come!!!! hehehe ๐Ÿค by @times.reads

๐Ÿ“– ARC Review ๐Ÿ“–

Title: American Hagwon
Author: Min Jin Lee @lee_minjin
Release Date: 29 September 2026
My Rating:

Min Jin Leeโ€™s American Hagwon is a brilliant and deeply engaging story that explores the lives of so many different characters as they navigate the intense world of hagwons, education, family, and immigrant life. This is my first read by the author and what I loved most was how the story gives space to different perspectives, allowing us to see the pressures and sacrifices that come with trying to succeed in a highly competitive environment. Each character brings something different to the story, making their world feel incredibly layered and real.

As someone from Singapore, I found the hyper-competitive education environment so relatable. The constant pressure to achieve, the expectations placed on students, and the way academic success can become so closely tied to identity and family expectations all felt very familiar to me. Reading about characters experiencing these same pressures made me feel genuinely seen. There were so many moments where I recognized emotions and experiences that I had grown up around, and seeing them represented so thoughtfully in this book was incredibly meaningful.
(swipe to continue)

I was also struck by the way Min Jin Lee has penned her female characters. They are not reduced to a single role but are portrayed with all their contradictions, ambitions, vulnerabilities, flaws and strengths. The women in this book carry so many different expectations of being successful, being mothers, being daughters, being wives and often holding families together (or breaking families apart) while also trying to figure out what they want for themselves. I appreciated how distinct their experiences felt, while still showing the shared pressures that shape their lives. There was something especially powerful about seeing women who are complicated, imperfect, ambitious, and deeply human.

American Hagwon definitely stands out for me in its ability to make such a specific setting feel universal. Beneath the hagwon system and immigrant experience are questions about ambition, belonging, family, sacrifice, and what it reall by @times.reads

๐Ÿ“–Book review

This book was first published in 1978 and rediscovered/ republished recently (48 years later!). It was written during the height of second-wave feminism and centres on one womanโ€™s dissatisfaction with domestic roles, her pursuit of liberation and rejection of patriarchal expectations - all key concerns of the movement at the time.

In Gaining Ground, we follow Abra, a wife and mother who abandons her conventional life for an isolated cabin in the Canadian wilderness. 9 years later, her daughterโ€™s arrival at her cabin forces her to confront the family she left behind and the cost of choosing freedom.

At the start, we learn that Abra married young and slipped into motherhood without much question or thought, simply going with the flow of what life and society expected of her. When she finally decides to leave and step into a life free from domestic obligations, she slowly reconnects with herself, spiritually and physically, and learns to listen to what her mind and body need.

There is a reunification with her sense of self as she steps away from the pressures of time and mundanity of her previous life. At the cabin, she experiences what it means to simply be - outside the structures and values that defined her primarily as a mother, wife and daughter.

This book made me think of the women in my own life - my mother and grandmother especially. Did they really have a choice? Or had they simply internalised the roles society handed to them as the natural course of their lives?

>> swipe to continue

On the pacing front, this was a slow read. Not much really happens in the conventional sense. Instead, much of the book sits with Abraโ€™s introspection and her attempt to understand who she is outside the roles she has spent years fulfilling. It asks us to take our time to soak it all in - much like Abra does with her new life.

Iโ€™m giving it a full 5 stars because this book feels contemplative and timeless in the way women still grapple with many of the same issues that Abra faces (in a same or different form). When I think about womenโ€™s choices today, we are told we are free to choose, yet every choice seems to be weighed down by the many taken in Singapore by @times.reads

๐Ÿ“– Book review (ARC)
Publication Date: 22 September 2026 (next week!)

High in the Swiss Alps, Miss Marple and her friends are enjoying a holiday at the luxurious Grand Alpine Hotel until a guest is found dead. With a cast of suspicious characters trapped together, thereโ€™s definitely a mystery waiting to be solved!!

This is one of the first mystery books Iโ€™ve read in a long while. I was flying through the pages and it kept me on my toes throughout!

Set in the 1950s, post-WWII, and within a luxurious hotel in the mountains, Foley really nailed that classic, cosy locked-room mystery vibe. And for all of you who are fans of Agatha Christie and her much-loved detective Miss Marple, youโ€™ll probably recognise many of the ingredients of a classic whodunnit in this book.

For one, you have your stereotypical suspects: the seductive actress, the wife, the husband, the friend and the helper. Reading it almost felt like playing a game of Cluedo, with the reader invited to play detective alongside Miss Marple and figure out who has the means and motive to commit cold-blooded murder. Miss Marpleโ€™s quiet sleuthing style also feels like a loving homage to the character. The way she chooses to observe first before breaking her silence to reveal how she has pieced two and two together - full respect for this woman.

In terms of writing, it is light, sophisticated and easy to get through. I thought Foleyโ€™s use of chapter length to control the pace of the story was especially well done. The alternating POVs also expose each charactersโ€™ innermost thoughts, giving us even more cause for suspicion. And with the book split into two parts, it neatly takes us from setting the scene and suspects, to the murder and investigation, and finally to the resolution - a clean progression with a satisfying ending.

Overall, I enjoyed this one! It felt like a modern return to the classic whodunnit - cosy, suspicious and very much a game of figuring out who is hiding what.

Thank you @times.reads and @dezziray_ for a copy of this ARC! ๐Ÿ’•
