A judge has ordered the police to take the "necessary steps" against a Vitals inquiry court expert who is contested by Joseph Muscat, overturning a magistrate's previous ruling.

The judgment, delivered by Judge Consuelo Scerri Herrera on Tuesday morning, is likely to lead to police filing criminal charges against Miroslava Milenovic.

Muscat has argued that Milenovic, a Serbian national, presented herself as a forensic accountant and did work to that effect without the required professional warrant.

Security camera footage has captured the moment part of a road beside the Tarxien church collapsed on Monday morning.

The section of Triq Paola collapsed at 7.20am, as construction works were ongoing around the back of the parish church.

The collapse opened a large, rainwater-filled hole outside a flower shop whose owner warned just days earlier that the prolonged roadworks were driving away customers and threatening his livelihood.

CCTV footage shows a small excavator digging up the road at 7am, around the spot where the ground would cave in minutes later.

Footage shows the excavator leaving the spot just after 7am and returning 20 minutes later, when it is seen slowly making its way through the rugged terrain.

At that point the ground collapsed, leaving the excavator, with its driver still inside the cabin, hanging on the edge of a gaping hole that opened up in the middle of the road.

Throughout the summer, beekeepers have taken to social media to highlight an unprecedented invasion of oriental hornets, one of the greatest threats to local bee colonies.

Denise Camilleri and Ray Sciberras, who are both full-time beekeepers, were speaking days after a routine inspection revealed that hornets had destroyed 30 of their hives at their Birżebbuġa apiary.

“Instead of seeing bees entering and exiting their hives, we found hundreds of hornets,” Camilleri said. “I could see hundreds of hornets inside every hive and not a single bee. They destroyed all our hard work.”

Camilleri and Sciberras estimated their losses at the apiary at approximately €30,000, even before counting the time they spent feeding and nurturing the hives over the long, hot summer months.

“We don’t make €30,000 in a whole year,” Sciberras said. “And we have losses in other apiaries too.”

The emotional toll was just as devastating as the financial loss. In videos posted that day, Camilleri could be heard sobbing quietly in the background as she inspected her hives.

“It was like being stabbed in the heart,” Camilleri told Times of Malta, comparing the scene to the Battle of Helm’s Deep, an iconic massacre from JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. “I had colonies here that had been with us for eight years,” she said.

Camilleri and Sciberras say they are at their wit’s end, having tried several different traps in their efforts to keep hornets at bay.

Jets flying over Malta on Thursday caught the attention of residents, with several people looking up at the sky wondering what was going on.

But there was a simple explanation: the Saudi Hawks, Royal Saudi Air Force's aerobatics display team, were back in Malta for a stopover.

Several Times of Malta readers reported seeing the BAE Hawk jets flying over the south of the island, particularly Marsascala and Cospicua.

Beekeepers on Thursday expressed disappointment over what they said was a lack of action by environmental authorities about the dwindling numbers of bees brought about by a surge in hornets.

For years, they added, they had been left alone to address an issue brought about by human activity.

Throughout the summer, beekeepers repeatedly warned that oriental hornets were devastating their colonies. They spent months urging the authorities to take urgent action, warning that the hornet infestation threatened their livelihoods and the agricultural sector.
