Sim Smith is pleased to present Signals, Tim Garwood’s latest solo exhibition with the gallery, opening on 8th October.

Please join us for a special celebration of the exhibition on Thursday, 8th October 2026, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at 6 Camberwell Passage, London SE5 0AX. There will be a special In Conversation from 7pm to 7.30pm between Tim Garwood and Livia Turnbull, Curator of Contemporary Art at York Art Gallery. Free, all welcome, RSVP essential.

We move through a world of signs and signals, constantly reading and responding to what surrounds us: a gesture, a colour, a sound, a fleeting encounter, a change in the weather. Together, these impressions shape the way we experience the world.

Signals begins from a similar state of heightened attention for Garwood, specifically from a handful of moments over the past year — uncanny happenings that seemed to carry a significance beyond coincidence. A fallen tree, a terracotta dog unearthed from a garden, the repeated appearance of arrows in unexpected places. These moments seemed to demand a closer look, suggesting that the everyday might be speaking in ways we are not always equipped to hear.

The paintings emerge from this act of listening. Rather than depicting a fixed reality, they follow what reveals itself along the way: unexpected connections, intuitions, memories and chance encounters. Each mark becomes a trace of that process, and each painting a record of an ongoing conversation between intention, energy, the familiar and the unforeseen. taken in Sim Smith London by @timgarwood

Philip Martin Gallery is proud to present, "A Certain Slant of Light," an exhibition of new and historic works by Carl Cheng, Holly Coulis, Tim Garwood, Sky Glabush, Pamela Jorden, David Korty, Aaron Morse, Hubert Schmalix, Sophie Treppendahl and Sung Jik Yang. In their respective bodies of work, these ten artists of different generations, geographies and backgrounds consider painting, sculpture and assemblage as means by which to interrogate interiority, personal vision and the nature of the art object today.

Visiting John Hoyland’s studio in London!

Thanks to John’s wife Beverley Heath-Hoyland and to Sam Cornish who works with Beverley at the Hoyland Estate. It was amazing to see so many of John’s ceramics alongside paintings that look as fresh as the day they were made. A true painting master, I really enjoyed seeing how so many of the shapes and marks were arrived at - even practised and planned on the floor with many taken from images and things that John’s had seen on his travels.

Such an inspiring day. If you don’t know John’s work his work is represented by @halesgallery @_paul_hedge_ @samuelrcornish @johnhoylandra #johnhoyland by @timgarwood
