Last autumn, I was invited by @kulturort_depot_dortmund to create a solo exhibition in Dortmund in response to their annual theme of (post-)colonialism. Over the following months, @steven_natusch, @wilkomeiborg, and I developed a new exhibition concept for my long-term project Lüderitz (2022–2024).

Alongside the large-scale prints, @marlenkaufmann designed accompanying text panels and a map that situates the work within its historical context and offers deeper insight into the different narrative strands of colonial entanglements.

My thanks to the @kulturort_depot_dortmund for the opportunity to present Lüderitz on such a large scale; to @steven_natusch and @wilkomeiborg for the curation; to @marlenkaufmann for the exhibition design; to @ecilaze for the installation; to digitaloriginal for the printing; and to @flug_der_amsel for his support with the text.

Many thanks as well to everyone else involved and to all visitors. The exhibition remains on view at @kulturort_depot_dortmund until May 10.

Tim Gassauer: Lüderitz
Projektpräsentation (in DE)

8 March, 14:00

Project Presentation (in GER)

In his project Lüderitz, Tim Gassauer (photographer, Chemnitz/Berlin) links the places of the same name in Germany and Namibia, highlighting continuities of colonial power and raising questions of memory, belonging and global resource exploitation. The project and photobook combine research - based visual work with historical and contemporary perspectives on Namibia‘s colonial past and its repercussions on German notions of homeland. Gassauer works between documentary and artistic photography, linking historical research with visual narrative and examining power structures, social dynamics and cultural narratives in his practice. by @timgassauer

For @woz_die_wochenzeitung I travelled with @malte_seiw to Hohenau in Paraguay, a settlement founded by German immigrants in 1900. In recent years, the town has seen a new wave of German migrants moving to the rural south of the country. Many of them are driven by distrust in state institutions and conspiracy narratives, seeking to establish alternative lifestyles away from what they perceive as a declining West. We met with new settlers and descendants of the first generation of immigrants, and spoke to local authorities and Paraguayan residents to understand their reasons for migrating and how they coexist with the local community.

The full story can be found here: https://www.woz.ch/2533/auswanderung-in-die-nostalgie/oh-wie-schoen-ist-paraguay/!37JTTNN0XR2H. Thanks to @woz_die_wochenzeitung for their trust and to @malte_seiw for the great collaboration.
