TODAY 8/30 @ 2pm. Candyman (1992) at Lozano Library. 1805 S. Loomis. Adapted from Clive Barker’s story The Forbidden, Candyman has cast a long spell on film lovers and film makers since its early 90s release. While completing a thesis on urban folklore, anthropology graduate student Helen Lyle encounters the “Candyman” legend in Chicago’s Cabrini Green housing projects. The candyman is a hookhanded phantom who is reputed to appear whenever his name is chanted in the mirror five times.
As Helen is drawn deeper into the legend, she comes dangerously close to the violence committed by Candyman, the ghost of an African-American artist and son of a slave who was murdered in the late 19th century for his relationship with the daughter of a wealthy white man.
Tony Todd gives an enchanting performance as the Candyman and conjured much of the character’s back story himself, providing Candyman with flesh as an artistic creation and cinematic legend.

Candyman is the final film of the Lozano Branch’s summer movie series ‘Chapters of the City’. In concert with the CPL’s summer programming, the series celebrates different facets of Chicago and ‘the city’ with an eclectic batch of films.

The Front Page (1931), 101 min. Lozano Library. 1805 S. Loomis.
Earle Williams, a convict about to be executed, escapes, throwing the Criminal Court Building into chaos. In this same unnamed city that is basically Chicago, reporter Hildy Johnson and his editor, Walter Burns, try to score a sensational story about the escaped convicted murderer. A foundational film in both the screwball comedy and newspaper genres, The Front Page introduced fast, witty, overlapping dialogue and the always looking for an angle reporter character to the Hollywood screen lexicon.

TODAY at 3:00pm at Lozano
Metropolis (1927), 153 min.

In the city of the future, wealthy industrialists reign from their ivory towers while the workers toil away. In this stratified society, a leader’s decision to enlist a mad scientist to solve the city’s problems may speed the conflict. Fritz Lang’s silent masterpiece is a portrait of oligarchs and technocrats allowed to run the city as a machine for their own benefit, a scenario wildly different from our current situation.

Metropolis is screening as part of the Lozano branch’s Summer Movie Series, Chapters of the City.
