Debuting my first piece, called “Faith and Doubt”, in my new metal wall art series “Ink to Iron”. Based off the story in Mathew 14:22-32, it draws inspiration from Peter walking in faith and sinking in doubt with Jesus on the Galilean Sea.

Why paint the past? I do not pine for it.
But I do need to process it. Somehow the remembering is essential to the releasing.

Intentionally laying down the old, to make room for the new.

I don’t regret my past marriage. Two beautiful sons came from our time together. I also don’t regret the divorce. It was a biblically legitimate and necessary ending. I deeply grieve the losses and sin, yet fully rejoice in the goodness and faithfulness of God.

I created this piece as a reflection of my wedding day. To process, hurt, heal…and ultimately let go.

The composition of this scene is stitched together based on my memories, a couple of which I have shared here.

As my ex-wife gets remarried this weekend, I wish her the very best. I do not look back with bitterness, but forward with love, forgiveness and trust that God’s hand is writing our stories.

Not one of us can alter the past. May we all commit to walking in the fresh supply of daily grace ahead and follow the path that King Jesus has set for each of us.

Let’s be honest, I did not fare so well on my art piece creation goals for 2025. Coming in hot at 0/7.
(In case you felt bad about not hitting some of your own comps & metrics, now you can feel better.)🤣

But God had other plans (some which were not on my bingo card) and I wouldn’t have it any other way. After all, isn’t that part of the exciting adventure in following and serving a big God?

So make plans and aim high for 2026, but let’s also keep our hands open, spirits sensitive, and hearts surrendered to God’s purposes, which are usually better than ours anyway.

I’m thankful for this community of friends and may God bless you all in 2026. Happy New Year everyone!

CW: This one is not for the lukewarm or faint-hearted…

God is either real or He isn’t. The Bible is His inspired word to us, or it isn’t. And Jesus either rose from the dead validating his message & proving his satisfactory payment for our sins, or he didn’t. There’s no middle ground. So let’s not waste our lives dabbling in the half-hearted semi-believing polite pew warming mediocre middle.

On my recent trip to New Orleans, I was particularly burdened for the lost in the city & felt the Lord’s hand weighing heavily upon me to reach them with the gospel. I didn’t have tracts, so opted for street preaching (or “Field preaching” as the Revivalists like Whitefield & Wesley called it), something I used to do regularly on the streets of Portland, OR as a part of my skateboarding outreach ministry before I ever stepped into vocational ministry, but that was nearly 18 years ago.

It is nerve-wrecking to start every time, as you can imagine. But by the grace of God, I took my place at the head of Bourbon Street, Bible in hand, & after praying was led to begin by expositing the parable of the prodigal son.

I was loud with the Love of God through the cross of Christ, and soon felt a fire roar to life within me. I wish I had room here to tell you all the magnificent God ordained moments & stories.

Early on, a young African man separated himself from his pack of friends and literally ran over to me, earnestly asking me to explain the gospel more fully to him (please pray for Coop)!

Several other young men (Christians I believe) approached me throughout the night, confessing being in sin. I exhorted them with Jesus’ words in John 10:10, that “the devil comes to steal, kill and destroy, but Christ came that we may have life to the full”, and prayed with each of them.

Several other believers came up & prayed for my protection. For every heckler I got, I received 5x the encouragement from believers.

Hundreds of people heard the gospel that Sat night among the crowds downtown & I was helped mightily by the Spirit as scriptures & illustrations flowed into my mind.

“Bring my soul out of prison, that I may give thanks to your name.” Psalm 142:7

I recently stumbled across this little napkin sketch crumpled in a binder from my college days. I was about 19 as far as I can tell. Either on the verge of becoming a Christian or had perhaps just become one.

I imagine in my mind at this time I was processing a growing awareness of my own sinful condition, feeling the weight of my inability to make myself right before God, and sensing the need to come to Christ for his offer of divine forgiveness and freedom.

All these years later, I still connect with this piece today, and the desperation of the Tim who drew it then. (Perhaps I’ll develop this crude concept further into a refined and colored piece one day.) Though I am now saved, I need him still to sanctify. I can’t do it myself.
There are things I wish I could change about myself, but I am learning acceptance and trust - that it is by his grace I am what I am in whatever good, and by his sovereignty I am not what I am not in whatever bad.

One day we will be fully free from the spiritual, physical, mental and emotional brokenness, bondage and decay of our current form, and for that I praise Him.

At times in my life I struggled to believe that God really loves me.

(I suspect this stems from layers of losses over the years, perhaps my own stubborn unbelief, or maybe just personal disappointment in some life outcomes that, if I’m not careful, can feel like a reflection of His disappointment in me.)

But lately I’ve been meditating on this prayer passage from Ephesians 3. I love the language Paul uses to capture the limitless love of God in Christ.

It is a love that envelopes us & has no bounds.

Ironically, he prays we would know this love that transcends knowledge (v.19) that we can only grasp by His Spirit strengthening our inner person (v.16) & in the context of community of God’s people (v.18).

The three dimensional metaphor caught my attention & led to this series of doodles & scenes. (I explored a few concepts in my sketchbook & then refined & modeled on a recent plane ride. I laid the dimensions out like I would prepare a staking / layout plan for a hardscape site design. 🤣 The dimensional tick mark are based on Roman style crucifixion nails.

I’m thankful that Gods love for us doesn’t rise or fall based on our ever evolving situations or fluctuating religious & moral performances.
Instead, His love was fully shown & forever settled at Calvary - Romans 5:8 says, “God demonstrates His own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” ✝️

I hope you are reminded, blessed & encouraged in this visual depiction & celebration of the truth of His love as I was.

Introducing, “The Man God Uses” (my first digital sketch).

Summary: God works in even the most difficult moments of our lives to create unforeseen beauty, purpose, and usefulness.

This piece was inspired , in part, by the following quote from AW Tozer:
“It is doubtful whether God can bless a man greatly, until He has first hurt him deeply.” (The Root of the Righteous)

I wish it wasn’t so. I would never have chosen the trials that have come into my life. And yet, God has given me glimpses of how His handiwork in the midst of immense pain can create an unforeseen beauty.

Often, to offer the greatest love and service to others, we must first walk our own path of suffering. The figure I created in this painting exemplifies this truth. He ascends, arms outstretched, chest open, surrendering himself to the nearly invisible divine touch. In his posture, there’s an echo of the crucified Christ, a reminder of a redemptive plan even in our most profound adversity.

White paint dripping down the heavenly forearm symbolizes God’s intimate involvement in the process of His masterful work. Animated by God’s finger, the man’s spirit emanates forth in a vibrant display of color, symbolizing newfound strength, blessings, and usefulness as a testament to the transformative power of God.

I want to express my heartfelt thanks to you all for your prayers & notes of encouragement during my recent mission trip. I truly felt them.

I was hoping to give a debrief sooner, but to be honest, I’ve had a really hard time (& no small amount of spiritual warfare) distilling the experience down to a “instagrammable” post (I’ve tried several times & it kept getting deleted somehow). 😣

Nevertheless, God gave me a few takeaways
from my time in the DR that I’d like to share with you all. I collected them under a few headings:

1. A View of Simplicity
2. An Appreciation for Ministry
3. A Call to Intensity
4. A Joy from Unity
5. A Law of Reciprocity
(Bonus) 6. A Renewal of Identity.

I’ll expand on the first & last ones here & drop the rest in comments.

#1. A View of Simplicity
Where is true fulfillment & contentment (the “good life”) to be found? Jesus says, “Life does not consist in the abundance of possessions” (Lk 12) & that the “deceitfulness of riches, cares, & pleasures of life” can choke out our spiritual life (Lk 8).

After walking through local villages praying for people, one of my teammates made a profound observation regarding their prayer requests - not one person asked for prayer for finances or money, & literally everyone asked for prayer for their families. Perhaps we in the West, with our individualism & affluence have lessons to learn here from our DR brothers & sisters.

The joyful freedom the believers demonstrated in the midst of frugal & difficult circumstances not only challenges our cultural values & life pursuits, it shines a holy spotlight on the all-sufficiency of Christ.

#6. A Renewal of Identity - Lastly, as some of you know, I have been mopping up my life after a tsunami of the last few years & trying to patch my heart & family back together again like a spiritual Humpty Dumpty.

This trip proved to be catalyst & watershed moment in my restorative journey as I step back towards my purpose & calling.

God has prepared good works for us to walk in (Eph 2:10), & in taking those steps I’ve experienced His energizing presence, refreshment & sustenance (Jn. 4:34).

Headed to the DR!
To be honest, I was given very sincere and rather persuasive advise NOT to go on this mission trip by a wise and loving counselor, pointing out that I am in the midst of a construction project, in the middle of coaching a baseball season, need to be with my kids, need to be present at work, etc. All very sensible reasons. Yet as I wrestled and prayed about it, the Lord gently but firmly gripped me with Mt 6:33, “but seek first the kingdom of god and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you”, and “if you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God.” (Colossians 3:1)

I am also going as a bday present to myself. 😄🎂🎉Not raising financial support for this trip, though prayer support is of course always appreciated!

So - Lord God almighty, “open eyes, turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith…” (Acts 26:18), may “the Spirit of the Lord be upon me, to preach good news to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound”, and may I “finish my race with joy, and complete the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of grace of God.” Acts 20:24
