Privileged to have spent 42 years around MLB, but even more so to be the father of such a great son & grandfather of the #Loganator & #LadyLana

Congratulations to Don Parnell, an amazing individual who epitomizes every definition of a best friend, on his induction into the Cal State San Bernardino Athletic Hall of Fame this weekend. Today, many of his former players and staff put together a gathering honoring their former coach and mentor. Don spent 24 seasons leading CSUSB baseball. During his tenure, 103 players earned All-CCAA honors, six were named NCAA Division II All-Americans and 21 were selected in the MLB. It was 57 years ago our lifelong friendship began, and fifty years ago this past June, Don, his future wife Valerie, and I graduated together from San Gorgonio High School. We played baseball together, played trombone in the concert, stage, and marching band, worked together at a catering company, shared a similar love for baseball and music, and were in each other’s wedding among other things. And it was my dear friend who introduced me to the J. Geils Band and one of the best live albums of all-time! #coachp #coyotes #friendship #spartans by @timmead

Fred, I will always be grateful for the 1980 interview for a job with the Dodgers. I will always be grateful for each of the congratulations notes sent following the various promotions. I will always be grateful for the words of wisdom at random times through the years. I will always be grateful for you opening the door and encouraging me to teach at Whittier College, pushing me out of my comfort zone in a direction I could never have imagined. And I will always be grateful for the eloquent, inspiring, and impactful presentation you delivered to KNS 321 in February of last year. The reach of your influence, your mentorship, and your philanthropic efforts are truly endless, #RIPFredClaire #Dodgers #WhittierPoets by @timmead

Bob Fontaine Jr. once told an interviewer: “The one thing about baseball: no matter where you are in the world, you feel at home as soon as you’re at a ballpark, because everybody there shares the love of the game, and they’re very open to helping and answering questions.” There are few better examples of an individual who gave far more than he ever received or even wanted. Bobby treated the game with respect and gratitude, He traveled the world scouting and teaching others. He had “it” when it came to player evaluation. A conversation with Bobby was a class not only in baseball, but also one filled with admirable perspectives and positivity about life. His handprints were all over the 2002 Angels. Those who came through the farm system and were members of the championship club will never forget that. Bobby was just one of those friends who made you feel good after spending any amount of time together. And when you did, he was present! His initial inquiries with others always focused on how THEY were doing. Many will tell stories in reflection about his amazing career, but for those who knew him well, he is more admired and respected for his role as a father. In 2021, with the assistance of sportswriter Taylor Blake Ward, Bobby published a book “In Search of Millionaires (The Life of a Baseball Gypsy): The Accounts of Bob Fontaine Jr. While I initially viewed it as a gift from a father to his children, I think I also see it now as one for all of us who love the game. RIP Bobby. The world is a little darker without you. #Angels #scouting #legacy by @timmead

It’s only fitting these two wonderful men share the same birthday. Their friendship created a bond that remains difficult to capture in words, but man what a tandem! Happy birthday to Hall of Famer, Rodney Cline Carew, and a happy heavenly birthday to James Herman “Jimmie” Reese, born this date in 1901. #angels #happybirthday #halos by @timmead

Capped a productive week with KNS 321 today with a pair of true pros, former veteran sportswriters Joe Haakenson and Jeff Miller. Joe, who also served as the Sports Editor of the Long Beach Press Telegram during his career, has authored a pair of books on the Angels and is presently working on a baseball related novel. His career included time with the San Gabriel Valley Tribune and the Southern California News Group, in addition to several years providing free lance sports coverage. Jeff’s resume spanned two major markets, having written for the Palm Beach Post, Miami Herald, South Florida Sun Sentinel, OC Register, and LA Times. Both offered insight regarding how they approached their jobs, handled different personalities, and the grind and demands of covering baseball, among several topics discussed. Their perspectives, stories, and advice seemed to resonate throughout the session. Also, kudos to our eight “volunteers” for Tuesday’s mock press conferences. Initial nervousness soon gave way to productive, thoughtful, and professional back and forth with the rest of the class, excelling in their role as members of the media.Looking forward to the pending mid-term presentations from each of the five groups! #whittierpoets #fourthestate by @timmead

You don’t raise heroes, you raise sons. And if you treat them like sons, they’ll turn out to be heroes, even if it’s just in your own eyes.” — Wally Schirra #nationalsonsday by @timmead

Something special is taking shape at OCYSF.

Our team recently spent time on site with our partners, laying the groundwork for our next banquet — set against the backdrop of the Hoag Classic.

Some of Orange County’s most recognizable brands are already coming together around what promises to be a very special evening.

For now, we’re keeping the details close. But for those across the Southern California business community who believe in giving back and helping change young lives through sports, this is one announcement you’ll want to keep an eye on.

More coming soon. taken in Newport Beach Country Club by @timmead

A masterclass in resilience earlier today for KNS 321 with Angels Hall of Famer, Tim Salmon. Mr. Angel covered so much during a fast-paced session, including his challenging childhood, major injuries at the outset of his minor league career, the focus & intensity he brought to the ballpark every day, handling fears & failures, faith, family and fatherhood, broadcasting, & post-career life. He reinforced embracing fear & failure, but not letting them control you. “The fear of failure is a natural human reaction. Don’t be afraid to walk through the doors of fear because fear holds us back from so many things.” Long ago he established a core mindset that “every time I failed, I was one step closer to figuring it out.” Whether it be the repetitive nature of the the smallest of details in practice, or basic tasks required in other vocations, Tim emphasized the difficulty to deliver in the big moments if you don’t pay attention during the little ones. He talked about continually learning, details, process, the importance of a routine, & of course, discipline. We first met at Yankee Stadium in August, 1992. A year later he attended his first major league spring training & finished the season as the A.L. “Rookie of the Year.” The smile on his face the night of Oct. 27th, 2002 will forever be etched in my mind. Tim emphasized the importance of choosing your circle of friends & the positive role they plays in your journey. I shared it’s hard mentioning Tim’s name without thinking of the late Garret Anderson, & vice-versa. The special bond between the two with the similarities in their core beliefs, faith, and manner in which they conducted themselves will long be part of their respective legacies. #Angels #WhittierPoets #TimSalmon #2002 #Wisdom by @timmead

Had an amazing time working with some true professionals and great friends (on both sides of the camera) in producing the first three episodes of “Always an Angel.” The brainchild of Jeff Proctor, Executive Producer of Angels Baseball Television and President of ProAngle Media, the vault of stories shared by Bobby Grich & Adam Kennedy, Mike Witt & Jered Weaver, and a solo effort from the “Kingfish,” was just amazing. And so appreciative of the energy and preparation of our pal, Mark Langston, someone who eventually deserves his own interview! Tough challenge for co-producer Mark Walton to edit and leave some great footage on the editing room floor - for now! #angels #ABTV by @timmead

There aren’t enough appropriate adjectives to accurately describe two very special people @ashleyeckstein and @davideckstein22. I was fortunate to watch the beginning of David’s major league career as he quickly became a fan favorite in Anaheim, while also earning the admiration of fans in visiting ballparks, & the respect of opposing players & baseball operations personnel throughout baseball for his selfless & focused approach to the game. The two-time World Series champion released “Just Enough” earlier this month. I assure you it is so much more than just a baseball book! Also had somewhat of a front row seat in watching how the former Ashley Drane became Ashley Eckstein. Her new book “Lucky 22” blends fiction and autobiography in a romance novel that is in essence their amazing story. Both recently were added to the USA Today bestseller list. Beloved by fans of the Angels & Cardinals, they will soon be entering their 22nd year of marriage later this year. As good as they come!!! #angels #cardinals #justenough #lucky22 #ahsokatano by @timmead

Privileged and blessed to have worked with these amazing professionals, and even better individuals. Countless stories and shared experiences with this group. So honored to have called them colleagues, but more importantly, friends. Newly appointed Club President, Molly Jolly, is as hard-working as ANYONE I have ever worked with. “Ranger Rick” Smith is in his 51st season with the organization and the only person to participate in each of the club’s 10 post-season appearances. Traveling Secretary Tom Taylor is the best in the business, while team physician Craig Milhouse is the most humorous, entertaining, and always available team Doc you’ll ever find. And finally, Chuck Finley, winningest pitcher in club history (165), and one of the toughest competitors and finest human beings I have EVER been around. Cherished times! #Angels by @timmead

KNS 321 enjoyed an inspiring session today with Anaheim Ducks Sr. VP & Chief Marketing Officer, Merit Tully. It has been a tremendous pleasure watching his ascent from an intern and eventual assistant in our department from Feb. 1998 thru June, 1999, to his current demanding, and impactful role. Merit oversees broadcasting, communications, community relations, entertainment, fan development, marketing, merchandising, publications and digital content, and social media. He also provides oversight of the club’s television, streaming and audio broadcast agreements, and led the creation of Ducks Stream, a 24/7 audio network featuring the NHL’s most comprehensive team-focused coverage. It was apparent how impressed the students were with the spectrum of his responsibilities. But I think what made his talk and follow-up Q&A session so relatable was the real-world advice on the critical role of communication, networking, and versatility while emphasizing their importance for students both in the present, and their future. Merit is as humble an individual as you’ll ever meet, amazingly creative, and a young man whose leadership skills are a model for others to strive for. #AnaheimDucks #FlyTogether #PaintItOrange #WhittierPoets #PoetPride by @timmead
