I took a walk to Roosevelt Island, aka Welfare Island, aka Blackwell’s Island, aka Minnehanonck. It’s a quirky, time travelly piece of New York that floats in the East River like a fraction of an eggshell you can’t seem to pin down in the city’s slick membrane. Its history is eerily relevant to times like these, long used as a place to isolate the destitute and unwell. The small pox hospital near the gates of Four Freedoms Park is a still standing reminder. When I visit the island, I can’t help but think of my great grandmother, who died there almost 70 years ago. Back then, my grandmother would ride a trolley right up onto the Queensboro Bridge, where it would stop midway. She’d disembark with her children in tow, my dad included, and they’d ride an elevator (yes, an elevator in the middle of the bridge) down to the island, to go visit the ever-ailing family matriarch. Every time I go, I notice something new, plenty of odd, and so much to photograph. With most of us dismayed by the pandemic, and no modern event to compare it to, this little island stands apart. For as long as I’ve been involved with the High Line, “the spur” has been a future tense, someday maybe, stupendously hard work kind of project. Today, the gates on 10th Avenue officially opened, thus completing the transformation of the last bits of railway into elevated public space. Super proud of my FHL family, especially @patrickhazari who’s overseen the design of the spur since day one, and @patrickcarter12 for throwing a star-studded opening (I was there, after all). . . .
