Joan Mitchell. Early exposure to her lively, melodic and expressive abstract painting steered me in the direction of being an artist. In college I saw a retrospective of her work at the Whitney and it really hit me on the head. A postcard of the panting “Hemlock” was on my studio wall for years, a symbol representing the tenacity and danger of painting. It’s not easy work~ it could kill you! I was also impressed by the tough look of Mitchell; her hard smoking hard drinking pall. She seemed like a person who was truly on their own trip and didn’t give a damn what people thought. She’s a queer one, for sure. There’s something odd and off about her. I made a drawing of her because it captured so perfectly the stoic painter facing the difficult world.

Gertrude and Alice. It’s hard to think of a more iconic queer couple of the twentieth century. I used to always fantasize what it would be like to be them because they were so mythologized in the books I read when I was in my heavy Stein phase. I worshiped Gertrude Stein as a larger than life gay literary giant. I coveted her life long relationship with Alice of art, food, poetry, gardens and dogs. Now, I don’t live on the vanguard of culture in Paris but I’ve found my peace with that. What I have found is a partner with whom I can “hang a life on” as E.M. Forster wrote in Maurice. And we’ve got gardens and art and dogs~ even a cat! I don’t think Gertrude could have lived with the indifference of a cat. At any rate, i think the Stein Toklas life is a good one to emulate, try as you may… On another note, when I was in Paris making my homage to Pere Lachaise, I found Gertrude’s grave stone but could not find Alice. I looked around in consternation. We didn’t have google yet so I couldn’t search it. I sat there perplexed. I walked circles around the grave and that’s when I noticed~ Alice is on the back of the gravestone! This is why you’ll see on the shirt I created that Stein is on the front and Alice is on the back. This is how they lived, this is how they died. This was the way it was and I’ll acknowledge that. As Gertrude wrote “…when this you see remember me”

Sinéad O’Connor was the first portrait I drew when I decided to do the Timoteo tee shirt series. She was a force of nature and one of my great personal inspirations. It absolutely breaks my heart that she’s no longer amongst the living. She was misunderstood and mistreated by the world in ways that are both unfair and harmful. She paid the ultimate price for speaking truth to power and living from such great emotion. She is my hero and I will continue to keep her memory alive. I love you Sinéad.

Tracy Chapman~

I once took a trip to the environs of Harvard just to see the streets where Tracy used to busk as a young singer-songwriter. Her music has haunted me since I was a young teenager and the store I worked in played the album “Matters of the Heart” over and over again. I memorized the breadth of that album and its urgency and emotive power pushed me towards a greater empathy and political activism in my life.

Tracy’s music is vital because it sits at the intersection of so many crucial life elements; from the need to be loved and the desire for social justice, to the traumas of childhood and the mystical elements of spirituality. Tracy explores the messy quilt of life and helps to make sense of it.

I also loved the resolute queerness reflected in her mysterious and often androgynous look. Her personal style of strong, chic yet spiritual artsy street performer makes her a legend in my book.

Carson McCullers~

A Southern Gothic writer of the most particular style and voice, her books enchanted me from a very early age. I could read between the lines and understand the queer longing of the characters, their unconventional outsider status being something that I could relate to at 15 years old when I picked up The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. I think the title spoke to me, if not the story of two weirdo men in a strange relationship in a small town.

I devoured her books and was amazed to learn she had eventually left the south and settled in Nyack, NY, in the Hudson Valley, not too far from where I grew up. I remember in college driving around to find her house, guessing which one it might be, just going on instinct alone. Wondering, what kind of house would she like? Would it be a reflection of her style? I settled on a ramshackle victorian, not too far and not indistinct from the house she actually lived in.

McCullers lived a sad life, she wrote sad books. I always loved all that sadness; in my youth it seemed life was such a sad, gloomy and emotionally difficult affair. I realize now the importance of striking a balance between the pathos and gloom and the joy and celebration. There in fact was a joy in McCullers writing and as an adult I can see it clearer.
