It’s giving back time! Had a good time @crisppizzaw6 with some authentic pizzas, and authentic vibes just off the river Thames near @riversidestudioslondon near Hammersmith bridge!
Hammersmith is fast becoming a cultural hub of arts, but now is accompanied by some great eat spots too!

We all thought the pizza box was outrageous so I decided to put a quick ā€œadvertā€ for the team, because why not?

Pictures are not memories, but they remind us, and allow us to see, what perhaps we missed!

This is the closest thing to my imagination I could put together!

Each room, each object or place having its own memory, each wall attentively watching whom enters and who leaves! For the untold stories!

Some clips taken at the

-Fashion Discover London 4th edition-

1. The manic stair case. I don’t think I’ve been in such an overwhelming environment before. Everyone was everywhere. Me, being frustrated that i couldn’t video the models without being interrupted. I decided to use it to my advantage. SHOW THE CAOS!

2. The show. It was nice seeing young talents and lovers of fashion coming out to show love and widen the scope of new possibilities in fashion. I tried to use camera movement to add more interest into the models at hand. I found that, using establishing shots on cat walks look much better than a simple pan track on sticks, almost mimicking a jib crane shot.

3. @abzserigne invited me down to get some clips for his business. Me being more passionate about filmmaking, I thought I’d use the opportunity to sharpen my craft by paying attention to blocking and character positioning. As soon as the ladies saw me filming they fell into character extremely quick ( thank you )

We see security in the back ground, in the midst of the crowd, cutting to a conversation that is divided by the line. We see it cuts to the lady saying ā€œ noā€ shaking her head , then back to the guard as he watches out, focus shifting from the main lady speaking to her companion. The line being in-front of him. The line representing boundaries. Not that any of it was planned, but once I see something I will always try to shoot it, as if I did.
the eye line, at the start they all share the same eye line, but when it cuts the guard, it worked well that he maintained the eye line, whilst the ladies were below it, signaling that they are under his watch.

It’s Something different, equally it’s not. but nonetheless still practicing camera movement, manual focusing , and paying attention to the 180 degree rule whilst maintaining eye levels.

(WARNING: references to alcohol and knives serve only as visual story telling props we do not promote the consuming or use of knives outside of healthy means of its functions. ( sanitisation and cooking )

The other day, just looking over my codec options in my LUMIX S1ii
I realised that, I only get 4:22 10bit all intra in 16:9/17:9 and NOT in 3:2 open gate.

Open gate offers flexibility in post, but it’s also a 1.50:1 vista vision aspect ratio, and obviously 16/17:9 is NOT that.

I figured, verti scope can be a useful method to get an open gate format with extra juice and character. Filming in 17:9 I will maximise the top and bottom whilst remaining the same width I would with the taking lens ( Helios 44-2)

Especially today, the trends are either imax , open gate or large format cinema.

Long GOP vs all intra

Long GOP is when a frame is compressed every few frames and predicting the image between. It’s prone to more colour banding , and image degradation. In my experience it feels less filmic but also, it’s a bad example of your cameras true colour science. Benefits of it, more aspect options, resolution options and LESS storage! Making it perfect for quick turn around projects.

All intra

All intra is when every frame is equally compressed with the cameras colour science, it’s true 10bit but also true LOG, offers superior performance in post and better for green screens. It takes less effort for your computer to decode the format, meaning smoother playback. It’s easier to get a film look without the image looking a touch soapy. The down side is, much more storage demands and is only in a few aspect ratios and not all are all intra, some are just 4.22.

All intra sits between social media formats and pro tools like internal raw like pro res raw 4.22 HQ and external BRAW.

Using the @godox.uk ML40bi lights to create depth and to enhance natural lighting.

With a mini gobo projector and a fresnel attachment you can make good use to create visual interest and to boost the narrative of your project.

The @godox_global ML range is intuitive and fun to use with its dedicated app to control the lights in real time!

I will be experimenting with the ML100r with two ML40bi soon.

Small lights mean you can have more precise control over accents of light in a room, it’s a lot safer to have it shine on someone’s face too. With larger lights, even at 1% on a 500watt light might be too much! But perfect for larger projects! Absolutely love Godox products!

Used the trusted Helios 44-2 on this with a film grain emulation.

Some clips I filmed during my visit to @bronxldn

Used the much beloved and infamous Helios 44-2 58. Sadly I wasn’t able to use the Mir 24n 35. Was meant to compare the two, but I left the adapter at home.

One thing I love about the 44-2 is, even wide open there isn’t focus smearing, where focus looks like it’s occupying a very specific part of the focus range with a drastic focus roll off. In saying that, I did play it safe and decided to film most of this at f4 and not at f2.

It, the lens being a 58mm, somewhat hybrid of a portrait normal nifty fifty, at f4 the separation and bokeh is acceptable.
The much faster canon FL 58mm F1.4 is a lot softer but yields a much more dreamer look, whilst the 4-22 isa lot sharper wide open with non vintage colour.

Given that I believe the FL has radioactive glass elements that fade over time, the 4-22 copying the biotar design from Carl ziess jena, uses single coating. Downside ( subjective) is it blooms across the frame, sometimes centring the subject in the middle .

The 44-2 has seen a lot of use in the Film industry from indie to blockbuster films in stylised shots, its legacy still lives on from its complex soviet past. by @timothy_samuel_dp

A brief test and comparison between 35mm spherical (APS-C crop) and 75mm anamorphic (APS-C).

I often like to work with two lenses within a project, but if their rendering differs too much, the cut can feel jarring—like clips pulled from completely different films. Cohesion in character is just as important as focal length.

Why compare anamorphic and spherical? I’ve always been drawn to intentional aspect ratio shifts within a sequence. Some filmmakers use this as a narrative device—isolating a moment and giving it more visual weight. It’s like taking a slice of the action and elevating its importance. Shooting 4:3 helps soften the transition and pairs more naturally with C4K full frame.

The Lomo OKC-1 75mm f/2 is natively spherical, but given its age, I’ve chosen to run it with anamorphic to avoid excessive wear on the helicoid. The image is thick, dreamy, and creamy. Skin tones feel tactile and dimensional. For an f/2, it holds impressive sharpness. The bloom is beautiful and can be gently controlled when stopping down.

The Mir-24H 35mm f/2 is another standout. Extremely sharp wide open, with gorgeous bloom that, when contained, softly milks the frame. Its character complements the Lomo remarkably well—different, but not disconnected.

Overall, the pairing works better than expected. The anamorphic attachment introduces aberrations that add character and charm to the Lomo without breaking visual continuity.

What I learned: using a 58mm with the Blazar anamorphic still doesn’t make sense. The hard vignetting forces a crop, effectively pushing it into the 60–70mm range anyway. The Lomo gives me more compression and a wider usable field of view without needing to crop in.

So for now, my Soviet set is:
