As I wandered through the grandstand a few days ago, I couldn’t help but think about all the fathers who spent time here over the decades. Some with their children, some without them.

Duane Michals, 1932-2026

In 1999, I found Duane Michals’ phone number in the phone book.

“Hello Mr. Michals, my name is Timothy. I’m a photography student…”

“Timothy! I’ve been expecting your call.”

A year later, on my first trip to New York City, I met him at his brownstone.

“My brother’s name is Timothy. But you’re the real Timothy!”

“There is no past. There is no future. There is only now. It’s gone! Now… it’s gone! Now… it’s gone! But we have memories.”

In a single afternoon, Duane deconstructed and then reassembled my creative brain.

What a giant.

Crossing the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge (BK>SI), 2015.

I’ve crossed the bridge thousands of times. I can honestly say I’ve cherished it on some level, in some way, each time.

There was that one time I passed a dump truck on fire, flames and deep black smoke billowing out of the cab, still trucking along with no driver in sight.

𝐖𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐎𝐛𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 by Michelle Maguire and Kelsey McClellan is the kind of project that makes my heart skip a beat.

Both a book and an exhibition, 𝘞𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘥 𝘖𝘣𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘴 pays homage to the early days of Christo & Jeanne-Claude, when they roamed Paris gathering humble, everyday objects to take back to the studio and wrap. As Robert Irwin alludes to: 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘺 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘪𝘵.⁣⁣

There’s a story that Christo once mailed Ray Johnson a wrapped photograph of a wrapped object. The punchline: when Johnson opened the package, he destroyed the artwork. That kind of paradox, revelation through loss,feels perfectly in line with both artists’ sensibilities, and it feels to me that Michelle and Kelsey are joyously unpacking it.

A few days ago, my own copy of 𝘞𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘥 𝘖𝘣𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘴 arrived. To my utter delight, the 𝐰𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐢𝐭𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐰𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝. Michelle had bound it with twine, cardboard, and a delicate drawing, with measurements (𝘰𝘩 𝘮𝘺), of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge (second image). A personalized package!

I hesitated opening it, but I couldn’t resist the pink fabric and twine wrapping the book peeking out from the edges.

Then, unprovoked, Michelle sent me detailed instructions on how to re-wrap the book: “𝘏𝘦𝘳𝘦’𝘴 𝘢 𝘵𝘪𝘱 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘣𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘶𝘯𝘸𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦-𝘸𝘳𝘢𝘱: 𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘨𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘢 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘰𝘰𝘯 𝘱𝘢𝘸𝘴, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘐’𝘥 𝘴𝘶𝘨𝘨𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳, 𝘵𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘦𝘳, 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘳-𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘭 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘤𝘵…”⁣⁣

I love this detail and commitment to the object!

But I will not be unwrapping the book. I love it just the way it is: 𝐚 𝐰𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐛𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐛𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬.

I’ve included photographs of the exhibition, the book, and archival images of Christo & Jeanne-Claude.
