Perelandra or Venus or some kind of landscape/angel/ghost. My paintings can, I think, be very easily interpreted as natural, observable environments. I certainly see what I see in them! But they are assembled "in the dark" from a random assortment of marks and colors, they are illusions. I sometimes imagine them as projected scenes from my subconscious. I teach drawing to college students and one of the things that blows my mind is the range of mark-making that occurs, every student has a distinctive way of making a mark. I suppose this is a no brainer (signatures), but for me it is one of the best things about teaching-seeing all these distinctive frequencies come out on paper- expressive as hell! by @timothymutzel

You just start making... the part of my mind that does this gets so impatient that it barely allows me make the surface to work on. I've been wanting to start some canvases but this whirl-wind energy that does NOT like process takes over before I even get the canvas out. Like playing in mud. I guess it's a response to all these screens and the meticulous checking, checking, checking + calculated processing that the programming I do requires. by @timothymutzel

Making Sense of the Universe (2006) acrylic on canvas, 50 x 45 inchesThe centerpiece from a show I had here in NYC 20 years ago... time and entropy have entered the equation from a more experiential manner to be sure!A lot of my work at the time circled around skulls and rockets, harsher energy - with "no commercial potential" (Boston College radio show I identified with in the 80s).I probably worked on this thing for a year or more. Very, very heavy, layers and layers. Exciting to think about showing this work together. The small paper mache reliefs really ignite the larger paintings.I'm continuing to explore my fascination with pareidolia... acknowledging (finally) the ambiguity of my intention -- my ever-shifting loyalty to the forms I resolve to create and the unexpected results that I fall in and out of love with. Anything can spring out of the work and everything is allowed - skulls, birds, rocks, trees, spacecraft, playgrounds whatever the viewer sees goes!
