The moms and dads of @specialolympics have always been our strength. They’re the first fans of our athletes and they’re the every day fans too. Thanks to them, our young athletes program helps our littlest competitors start strong. Our research shows that participation in young athletes can triple the rate of development for children with ID making speech, language, and movement easier. Saturday, June 20, the 2026 @specialolympicsusagames will kick off in Minneapolis, bringing together nearly 3,000 athletes and 1,500 coaches from all 50 states to compete across 16 Olympic-type team and individual sports. In 1968, the first @specialolympics took place in Chicago, with founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver reciting the Special Olympics Athletes’ Oath before the games kicked off, “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” Now, as we kick off the game 58 years later with that same oath, @gwenwalz, First Lady of Minnesota, urges us to look at theses games not just for the best of the human spirit on the field, but the dignity and respect that comes on the sidelines. We can all find hope in these games, in the athletes, the coaches, the volunteers, and the future they represent. Just arrived in Minnesota and the whole state is ready to host the athletes from all over the country for the USA games!!! The torch arrived in Red Wing, carried by 6 Special Olympics athletes and over 60 @letrforso volunteers from across the country. Next stop, Stillwater.
