Pioneer Day celebrates July 24, 1847: the day the first Mormon pioneers arrived in the Salt Lake Valley.Martin Hansen arrived nearly 15 years later, in 1861, after leaving Denmark to build a new life in American Fork. He set out to be a pioneer, but not the kind he'd be remembered for.Martin was the first person confirmed to discover Hansen Cave and later became the go-to expert as others searched for caves throughout the area. He didn't plan to become a caving pioneer, but that's how history remembers him. On Thursday, July 30th the caves and Cave Access Trail will be closed for an all-park staff training. The Swinging Bridge Nature Trail and picnic areas remain accessible. And at Timpanogos Cave National Monument, we think we've made a pretty great team!On this National Be a Good Teammate Day, we're taking time to recognize the hard work everyone on this team contributes. From cleaning the restrooms, to ordering supplies, to studying the cave and, yes, to giving tours, it can't be done by just one. We work together to protect this place for future generations and to provide current generations a chance to experience and connect with it for themselves. Who has been a good teammate to you? Meet ambassador raptors and their dedicated caretakers from Great Basin Wildlife Rescue this Saturday, July 25 in Swinging Bridge Picnic Area from 10:30am to 11:15am! This event is open to all and free to attend. We recommend bringing a camp chair for seating so you can watch, learn, and ask questions comfortably. Did we just feel a nibble? Come to this program and feel for yourself!This Saturday, July 25th is the first Fishing Day for the year. Barbless-hooks, non-worm bait and friendly park rangers and volunteers make this an approachable introduction to catching your own fish (and maybe earning your Junior Ranger Angler badge!). Meet us at Mile Rock Picnic Area at 6:00pm for the beginning of the program. Poles and bait are provided. Participants 12 and older will need to purchase and bring with them a valid fishing license with the State of Utah.Are you hooked already? Can you dig it? Beginning in the 1870s, the land that would become part of Timpanogos Cave National Monument was included within the historic American Fork Mining District. People from near and far flocked to the area in search of fortune. Deposits of silver, lead, zinc, and iron were found, increasing the mining boom further. American Fork and surrounding communities grew rapidly with hopeful miners, their families, and those who came to support the mines as well. With this came an increased need for timber; the lumber industry boomed as well, with loggers crossing the mountainsides to harvest the local timber supply. This increase in activity contributed to the eventual discovery of the Timpanogos Cave System.Would you be willing to uproot your life to work as a miner?📸: NPS Photo by @timpanogoscavenps

Here at Timpanogos Cave National Monument, you could say we are just batty about Junior Rangers!This week we have another Science Saturday Junior Ranger program. This week it's Build-a-Bat! Join us on Saturday, July 18th at 10:30am at our Swinging Bridge Picnic area to discover how bats are adapted to life both inside and outside of caves. We will also make our very own bats to take home! This activity is designed for ages 8-12, but all are welcome and it is free to participate. If you find yourself trapped on the ground like so many other humans, come explore the night sky at our Dark Sky evening program this Saturday, July 18th from 7:30pm to 10:30pm at the Pine Hollow Trailhead. Look through telescopes, find constellations, and learn how the night sky impacts our life with Park Rangers, the US Forest Service, and the Utah Valley Astronomy Club. When you think of a fast animal, what do you think of? You may think of a cheetah or a peregrine falcon, but you probably wouldn't think of a bat. However, Utah is home to the world's fastest bat: the Mexican free-tailed bat. These bats can average about 60mph in flight and have been recorded at top speeds of nearly 100mph. These speeds allow them to cover a lot of ground quickly when migrating seasonally. So next time you look at the night sky, don't blink! Even the animals agree, there's no place like home!Join us in Riverview Picnic area this Saturday, July 11 at 6pm for our Art in the Park evening program where we'll learn about what animals need to survive and then do an art project creating a tiny habitat for an animal. The project is quite simple. Animals need only a few things to survive - they need an environment, a place to hide, and food! Each person that comes to the art night gets one tiny animal and a small cardboard box to make into the habitat for the animal. We use air dry clay and our imaginations. It IS our fault!The Timpanogos Cave System formed along a network of small fault lines created by tectonic activity. Around 160 million years ago, compressional forces began within the Earth's crust that caused these faults to develop. Later, extensional forces stretched the continental plate, further shaping the landscape.These fault lines provided pathways for hot, acidic water to circulate through the limestone. Over millions of years, the water gradually dissolved the rock, enlarging the fractures and creating the caves we see today. Calling all Junior Rangers! Have you ever wondered about the science behind the brightest star in our sky - the Sun? Join us at Swinging Bridge Picnic Area for Science Saturday on July 11th from 10:30-11:15am to "spot the sun!" At this program we will learn how we can observe the sun from Earth and how sunlight impacts our world. We will also use the power of the sun to make our own artwork!
