New work for @taschenmesser with director @nicolaihildebrandt.

This one is weird and I loved every second of the creative process from the start - be it with Nic in development and prep, with the technical team during the shoot or the intense post process with @franziska.heinemann ,who was very into what we were doing.

Thanks peeps. So much.

To film the seriously endangered Darwin frog, we used the @dzofilm 18-28mm X-Tract Zoom T8 extensively. This tiny frog, which measures just 2-3cm, lives in the valdivian rainforests of Patagonia. It was one of the protagonist for our short doc about wildlife conservation efforts in Chile commissioned by @zoo.leipzig

It was important to us to find creative ways to tell the frogs story - so we used a variety of tools. From the 360 degree periprobe for interesting angles to motion controller sliders. Director @peterhaueis and I tried to take everything we learned in the commercial filmmaking world and put it into these frog pack shots, bringing this little animal to the big screen.

Our main camera was the Alexa35, the probes we mainly used with the Blackmagic PYXIS12K as well as the Nikon ZR.

All of these shots were created under the guidance of @claudioazat

slide 1 - our Darwin frog hero shots. The first shot was made with the 360° (a periscope like) probe zoom (BTS of that shot on a later slide). The second one was made with a motion control slider we took into the valdivian rainforest with us. These shots have the @soerenschaller stamp of approval.

slide 2 - some BTS of the dolly in (the frog really is tiny)

Slide 3 - more BTS

Slide 4 - that happens if you travel for too long. The client showed us the famous Clint Eastwood close up from his favourite film (A Fistful of Dollars) and we… recreated it. To get that perspective we coupled the probe zoom with a 2x doppler which turned the lens into a 36-56mm lens.

Slide 5 - more serious doppler + probe zoom footage

Slide 6 BTS of the tiltdown from slide 1

A third insight into our recent documentary about species conservation in Chile and Patagonia. It’s from one main part about Darwin’s frog, which we followed deep into the temperate rainforest near the border of Chile and Argentina.

The endangered amphibian is very unique and has developed a quite fascinating reproductive strategy: males breed their offspring in their vocal sac.

Professor @claudioazat, director of @onehealth.unab institute at @cienciasdelavidaunab from @uandresbello dedicated over two decades to research the tiny frog. It doesn’t grow bigger then 2,5 cm. Claudio was the best guide in the forests of Huilo Huilo and played a major role in achieving the filming of Darwin’s frog in a very unique way. Quite an adventure to bring a tiny animal to the big screen... well, here on insta it's tiny again, I guess... but still!

The shoot of the frogs was intense and we had to be more than careful. As well as in the forest but also in the breeding station at @udeconcepcion, where we met with Professor Claudio Correa, Professor Juan Carlos Ortiz, @amapola_palacios and @catamartinb who introduced us to the frogs for the very first time!

Huge thanks go to @ranitadedarwinong (especially @claufaureb and Bastian Santana) who are doing major work to achieve better conditons for the species and its ecosystem and also to @huilohuilo_reservabiologica, @fundacionhuilohuilo, Eduardo Arias and Alexandra Petermann who gave us access to the biological reserve for filming.

Some Snippets and stills from our recent documentary about species conservation in Chile and Patagonia. Taken from the episode about the Humboldt penguin, which we followed to the coast of the Pacific Ocean.

The endangered seabird is moving more and more to the south of Chile, and that’s where we filmed it. On Chiloé Island.

Professor Alejandro Simeone from @onehealth.unab and @cienciasdelavidaunab at @uandresbello dedicated most of his research life to seabirds and especially the Humboldt penguin. He brought us on a mission of observation at the rough coastline of the ocean and to the small islands, where penguins tend to breed.

Humboldt penguins are very effected by climatic conditions, global warming, this years extreme El Niño events, fishery and deseases like the bird flu.

To capture the shots we wanted, this was a truly special adventure. We transported our equipment to the islands by jumping off the boats onto the shore and we had to be extremeley careful to not disturb the animals. We were constantly hoping the weather forecast would hold, so that we would reach the islands, where penguins live together with sea lions and other marine animals. We were rewarded with breathtaking glimpses of wildlife that you rarely get to see otherwise. This will certainly stay with us for a long time, and we’ll never forget it.

Huge thanks go out to all of our captains (@danielastefigueroa), the support of Conaf, the locals and the pacific winds!

Some Snippets and stills from our recent documentary about species conservation in Chile and Patagonia. Taken from one central part of the film about one of the umbrella species that we followed in the Río Chepu in Chiloé. The locals call it Huillín, the southern river otter. It’s endangered and lives in one of the smallest distributions when it comes to otters worldwide.

Professor @gonzalomedinavogel from @onehealth.unab and @uandresbello dedicated over 40 years of research to the island and to the otter. We were lucky enough to be allowed to follow him into the riverlands and to learn about the special ecosystem. It’s a mysterious and impressive landscape, full of connections that make together a very special environment.

There is a second species living right next to it: The marine otter, or Chungungo, which lives in the sea and which is the smallest marine mammal in the world. Also endangered.

Both otter species are extremely fascinating but they also face a lot of threats. It shows imminently the huge connection of all species, the effects on ecosystems and the human dimension of the problem. Everything is connected.

Huge thanks to @peregrina.erratica, @danielastefigueroa, @gatode_rio, @otter_chile, Macarena Barros, @chiloeprotegido and all the locals who supported us and who gave us insight, shared their knowledge and welcomed us so warmly in Chiloé.

Patagonia. Extremely happy and proud for the release of our documentary about species conservation in Chile!

Working on the production, research and script since last year, we were extremely fortunate to travel to Chile in January 2026. We were on the road for one month, covering nearly 3,000 km across the Chilean countryside. We shot a wide variety of big and small towns, along the Pacific coasts, in the riverlands of Río Chepu on the island of Chiloé, the temperate rainforests near the Argentinian border and in the streets of Santiago de Chile.

The film focuses on strategies for the protection and conservation of Patagonia’s wildlife, and our three main characters could not be more fascinating: The tiny Darwin’s frog, the southern river otter and the Humboldt penguin. All of those species are fighting the risk of extinction.

Comissioned by @zoo.leipzig, the film reflects the commitment and dedication with which the zoo supports nature conservation projects around the world. It highlights the close on-the-ground collaboration in Chile by emphasising the urgency of global conservation work.

We pushed on every level to capture the beauty of those locations. Travelling with several camera setups and a well prepared set of lenses, we wanted to be ready for all the different challenges. Shoutouts go to every single person that we encountered during the project! Sharing some more insights soon.

Discover the full documentary online and on location at the Arche Haus and at the newly built facilities ‚Tierra del Fuego‘ at Zoo Leipzig.

4 months of pre-production and production in Chile/Patagonia coming to a close.

It’s been a tough but extremely rewarding ride and I can’t wait to share what @peterhaueis and I have been cooking up. It’s going to be coooooool (I think).
It was first go as DP & Creative Producer on a project of this scale. Can’t reveal too much about it, but excited to share more in the coming months.

No.1: men starring at monitors. This plus @knut_mueller (see next slide), who took the picture, was our German core crew.

No.2: producer @knut_mueller looking sharp as stand-in ✨
What a team ☺️ I haven’t worked closer with any group of people before and you guys made it happen.

No.3: director @peterhaueis hiding from Sergio Magelone, infamous Magellanic penguin, on Isla Punihuil 😶‍🌫️

No.4: cause you gotta be careful, penguin islands become crime scenes more easily than one would think 🕵🏽‍♀️🫆

No.5: but on a more serious note, shoutout to our kick-ass Chilean crew led by producer @vicamejo1 - can’t thank you enough, amigo 🙏🏻

No.6: @chente.rio is the junior producer turned gaffer & grip - we couldn’t have done it without you. Gracias, hermanito 💪🏻 he’s moving to Bilbao, Spain this year. Book him while he is still available.

No.7: this is one of the first drone shots 2nd Unit & wildlife DP extraordinaire @cris.tob and his brother from another mother José presented to us. I mean… what a treat. We were so lucky to have the both of you.

No.8: shoutout to my ac @jannis_kern for managing a literal boat load of equipment through the valdivian rainforest, the pacific and chepu river: sharp focus & good vibes. Thanks to @onegrimm_nobro from @vantagefilmofficial and Flo from @maierbros , I was able to take a dream set of equipment to patagonia. Philipp and Flo collaborated behind the scenes to supply a custom made mount for our easy rig stabil so I could mount it to stands, boats and vans for extra spicy shots.

No.9: @nikondach & @zcinema_ supplied me with two Nikon ZRs to test and boi did this lil camera deliver.

No.10: Sergio Magelone

No.11: frog with an attitude

In collaboration with @asteraofficial I’ll shed some light on the way we created the dance sequences for my debut film FASSADEN engl. Curtains

FASSADEN is a documentary film directed by @acyranek that deals with domestic violence through dance. Our two dancers move through all the stages of an abusive relationship, from the first signs to complete psychological and physical abuse.

Our film had a very modest documentary budget so I opted for a 20’x20’ toplight setup powered by 4 Astera Hyperion tubes and 16 Titan tubes, to give me the ability light the dance floor with 5 different zones. That way we created gradients or color mixes just with a couple clicks in the AsteraApp.
There are just some exceptions, but the dance sequences were almost entirely lit by the toplight and a Kino 4x4 bank equipped with 4 Titans as the occasional harder backlight.

We had to shoot in two blocks, so two gaffers; shout out and big thanks to @lumaxn and Benjamin Hirlinger.

A huge thanks to @asteraofficial for being a partner on this project.

#1 one of the most powerful and haunting sequences of the film. After our protagonist has separated from her abuser, he keeps stalking and intimidating her, she is still under his influence, entangled in his web.

#2 small glimpse at our toplight setup. We used a a sandwich of two 20x20 frames, the top one was ultrabounce, inbetween the Titans, the bottom frame was quarter grid cloth.

#3 a contemplative moment towards the end of the film in which our protagonist assesses the damage down to her. I opted for a very cool, blue hour feeling lighting.

#4 the very first violence in the story and a powerful moment in the film that made me realize during shooting how expressive dance can be. The entire crew felt it during the shoot. That was one of my most memorable shoot days.

#5 parts of the film where printed out and hand manipulated, then scanned and put back into the film. I think the image speaks for itself.

#6 this is a technical drawing my friend and gaffer @josefskijensen made for a previous project.
