This video is made of footage that we didn’t use in our short film ‘Between’ in the @nwdcco Pueblo Mountain Park in Beulah, CO. As of right now the Aspen fire has burned over 28,000 acres and is expected to grow today. Everything in this reel and the film may have already been lost. The communities nearby had all been evacuated from their homes and many homes have been lost already. Over my life I have come to Beulah for refuge many times. There’s a magic there for me that I can’t put into words. My own grief can’t compare to those who have lost their home or have been displaced, but it’s hard to think some of the old pines will be gone, the building my parents were married in and so many structures are likely gone or damaged. In the footage, @rangerpinemartin (@middle_creek_publishing) walks and forages in the mountains and forests of the park and I chose one of my favorite poems by David to accompany the footage from his book Deepening the Map. Celestial Mushroom fun! I really enjoyed designing this painting. I designed it specifically so it could be taught to anyone - a way to explore color and shape as well as build confidence in painting with watercolors (especially if you have no experience with painting). Doom Scroll wouldn’t be what it is without the amazing performances by Ophelia, Conan, and Lenore who played the “creatures”. We shot this scene first, which also took the most preparation. Getting elementary school aged children to be in front of a camera and be patient on Saturday of Halloween weekend making a @48hourfilmproject could have been potentially a very hard thing. But they made it fun. This is a prop made for our film BETWEEN. The entire story was inspired by this jewelry box left by our neighbors after they moved. I always thought it looked like a fairy sarcophagus. This inspired a story about a man who experienced loss, finds this in the woods and has an encounter with a fairy experiencing their own. The prop was made by @chrissysparksart and @mekamint in less than a day during the @agbofilms 49 hour film competition. Sculpted in polymer clay and painted. The burial fabric draped over her is made from Chinese Xuan paper from @orientalartsupply. I usually use it to practice my brush painting but we’ve found it to be a useful material for small things and props. When wet you can shape it and it holds its structure and then it dries well. Of course the butterfly wings were from an already dead specimen. Then we laid her on a bed of moss in her resting place. We found it so beautiful that we carried and cherished it on set as if it was something we found. @rangerpinemartin who plays the man in the film carried it with such care and reverence in his scenes that it became real. She rests in our house now. When looking and holding it there is a real sense of peace that you can feel. We’ve loved hearing how special this film has been to people. It’s only 3 minutes but it will always be a special project. You can watch the film on YouTube and Vimeo. We drove three hours into the mountains, started working after nine at night, and had no idea if it would work with forty-five hours left. Some context on the film “Between”. It was made during the @agbofilms “No Sleep ‘Til Film Fest” 48-hour competition. We filmed it in the Pueblo Mountain Park in Beulah, Colorado, a place that has a lot of history for me personally. For those unfamiliar, you get 48 hours. That’s it. When it comes to these types of projects, I like to take risks. It’s a good, fertile ground for risk taking. Taking the risk this time were my best friend, @rangerpinemartin (@middle_creek_publishing), my wife, @chrissysparksart, @mekamint, and myself. The first risk we took was that we had to drive three hours to our filming location. We didn’t arrive until after 9 pm, three hours after the 48 hour time constraint started. On the drive down, I was messaging Dave, and going back and forth on story and plot Ideas. Without spoiling it, this film was inspired by a jewelry box left to us when our neighbors moved out. I had always thought it was interesting, so we brought it with us. The second risk about doing these types of projects is that you’re given a prompt (not the AI kind, the old fashioned kind) and you don’t know what it is until the beginning of the timeframe. This one, received at 6pm MT, during our drive, was to create a film about “perspective.” The third kind of risk is you don’t know what “assets” will actually be valuable to the prompt until you get it. These include equipment, crew, cast, location, props, the hidden talents of skills of your team. In this case, Chrissy and DD are skilled in sculpting polymer clay and in painting, so we brought those supplies with us. The last risk and most important is when you know what you are going to do, is it going to work? For me, if there isn’t an element of “oh shit, is this going to work?” then I’m not living up to my own standard. I’m not respecting the talent of the people who are here working on this, or the people who helped me earn the privilege of being here, now, making a film.
