it doesn’t always have to be poisoned apples & cackling laughter, am I right? give me a warm kitchen, pumpkin bread fresh from the oven & a shelf full of witchy books & I’m sat.

for this stack, I wanted the softer side of witchcraft — spells that go a little wrong, cozy shops, autumn evenings & witches who feel more at home beside an oven than in the middle of the woods.

basically, less malediction & more mulberry pie.

𝐒𝐄𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐌𝐁𝐄𝐑 𝐁𝐎𝐎𝐊 𝐇𝐀𝐔𝐋. 🍂📚

September somehow turned into a very dangerous month for my bookshelf.

A little bit of cozy, a little bit of creepy, some dark academia, some mystery & apparently absolutely no self control whatsoever.

I feel like this haul perfectly caught that weird September in-between where I’m still holding onto a tiny bit of summer while already fully leaning into darker, moodier reads for autumn. it‘s just my favourite season overall & I can not wait for shorter & moodier days.

And yes, finally adding Ninth House & Hell Bent to the pile feels extremely appropriate for the season. 🖤

𝐎𝐂𝐓𝐎𝐁𝐄𝐑 𝐇𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐅𝐔𝐋𝐒. 🍂📚

I definitely had bigger reading goals for the last few weeks, but life had other plans - & I think I’m slowly learning to be okay with that.

I set myself a reading goal at the beginning of the year & I’m nowhere near it. there have simply been other things that needed more of my attention & I’d rather take my time with the books I do read than rush through them just to make a number go up.

So instead of giving myself another overly ambitious tbr, I’m keeping october simple.

I’m still making my way through „a witch’s guide to magical innkeeping“, & once I’m finished, there’s one book I really want to prioritize:

𝐒𝐥𝐞𝐰𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐭.

witches, folklore, horror & exactly the kind of story that feels right for october.

it’s also one of my five-star predictions for fall, so naturally I’ve created absolutely no pressure for myself at all.

𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐍𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 𝐔𝐍𝐁𝐎𝐗𝐈𝐍𝐆. 🖤🌊

apparently my bookshelf needed to get a little darker.

this time, Evernight dragged it straight beneath the surface.

𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐚 𝐡𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭‘𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐝 already has one of those covers that makes you want to stare at it for a little too long — dark water, half-seen shapes, something unsettling hiding underneath it all — & somehow the rest of the edition only leans further into that feeling.

the collage-style hardback feels almost like evidence pulled from some strange coastal investigation, the sprayed edges look murky and submerged & the endpapers genuinely feel like scenes you probably shouldn’t be wandering into alone after dark.

I think that’s what I love most about this edition: every layer feels like another thing slowly surfacing.

& somehow the whole book manages to feel eerie, salt-soaked & slightly cursed in the best possible way. 🕯️

safe to say I spent a completely reasonable amount of time staring at every tiny detail.

𝐍𝐎 𝐏𝐋𝐀𝐍𝐒, 𝐉𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒. 🍂☕️

the weather may still be pretending it’s summer, but I decided to make it feel like fall anyway.

there were pumpkin pancakes, too much coffee, candles burning before it was even properly dark, Practical Magic in the background & the apartment slowly turning a little more autumnal.

I brought out the seasonal mugs, decorated a few corners, baked an apple crisp, spent some time reading A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping & officially invited fall in by starting my yearly Gilmore Girls rewatch - & honestly, I think that’s exactly what I needed.

nothing particularly exciting happened — just good food, comfort shows, books, warm lights & all the little things that make a season feel real, even when the temperature hasn’t quite caught up yet.

consider this my official start of cozy season. 🍎🕯️📚

𝐒𝐋𝐄𝐔𝐓𝐇 𝐒𝐀𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐃𝐀𝐘. 🔎🕯️

the evenings are getting darker, which apparently means my poirot collection is getting bigger.

this month, „The Hollow“ & „Curtain“ joined the shelves—& both feel exactly right for this point in the year.

one has the kind of country-house setup that practically guarantees secrets, motives & a dinner table full of people who absolutely know more than they’re saying.

the other already feels a little more final, a little more ominous, and very much like the sort of mystery i want to save for a properly quiet evening.

i think that’s what i’m starting to love most about sleuth saturday. it gives me an excuse to slowly build the collection, but also to make a little event out of it—two more cases, two more evenings spent trying to work things out before poirot does.

the first days of fall always make me crave a good, old-fashioned mystery.

maybe it’s the darker evenings, the colder air creeping in through the windows or the sudden urge to stay in just a little longer.

maybe it’s the return of warm drinks, soft blankets, rainy afternoons & books full of old houses, clever detectives and people with entirely too many secrets.

whatever it is, this is the time of year when murder mysteries somehow become a comfort genre.

It’s been a while since I did one of these, but some matches are just a little too obvious.

Bats, moons, candlelight & a book about a woman accused of witchcraft? Slewfoot, your mug has arrived. 🦇🌕🕯️

This one has been waiting patiently on my shelf for quite a while, but now that the nights are getting darker & spooky season is slowly creeping in, its time might finally be coming.

I’m very ready for something dark, strange & a little wicked. 🌙🕯️

𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐑𝐓 𝐀 𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐁𝐎𝐎𝐊 𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐇 𝐌𝐄. 🍂☕️

It might still be way too warm outside to properly feel autumnal, but sometimes you gotta take matters into your own hands.

I think it’s finally time for 𝑨 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒄𝒉‘𝒔 𝒈𝒖𝒊𝒅𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒎𝒂𝒈𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝒊𝒏𝒌𝒆𝒆𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 by @sangumandanna.

I’ve actually had this book sitting on my shelf for quite a while now, despite being ridiculously excited about it. I think part of me was waiting for the perfect moment to start it—which probably has a lot to do with how much „The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches“ means to me. I literally have a tattoo inspired by that book, so that should tell you everything you need to know.

I loved the warmth of that story, the characters, the found family & just the way Sangu Mandanna writes cozy fantasy. So obviously my expectations for this one are pretty high.

But after Kiss Slay Replay & all its horror, murder & general chaos, I’m very ready for something a little softer.

So even if the weather isn’t really cooperating yet, the pumpkin teapot is out, I’ve brewed myself some tea & I’m finally opening the book I’ve been putting off for far too long.

I really hope I love this one. 🍄🤎

the mystery was supposed to end with someone pulling off a mask, everybody laughing & the meddling kids heading home. unfortunately, nobody told these books.

i’ve always had a strange fascination with stories about people getting a little too curious for their own good. the kind where one strange clue turns into another, nobody knows if the supernatural is actually real or not & somehow walking away stops being an option in the middle of the investigation.

these books all scratch that particular itch for me — meddling kids, things from the past that refuse to stay buried & increasingly questionable theories that somehow still feel worth following.

basically, books for anyone who wanted to be a member of the mystery gang—& apparently never developed a healthy survival instinct. 🔎

𝐉𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐅𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐒𝐇𝐄𝐃. 💍🔪

𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝒘𝒂𝒚 𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉.

The bridal bouquet has been thrown, the party’s over & we’re leaving the reception hungover & happy.

„Kiss Slay Replay“ might be one of @rachelharrisonsghost most chaotic books yet—& I mean that in the best possible way.

We follow Willa, who already feels like everyone around her has figured it all out while she’s suddenly starting over. & to top it off, she attends a wedding at a former summer camp, gets murdered & wakes up to live the whole day over & over.

In good old Groundhog Day fashion, Harrison basically takes a tour through horror itself. Masked slashers, zombies, aliens & increasingly bizarre creatures get their turn, every loop determined to outdo the one before. Some scenarios worked better for me than others & eventually things became a little too over-the-top for my personal taste—but I also think that’s very much the point. It’s ridiculous, creative & really fucking fun.

What I loved most, though, was what stayed the same underneath all that chaos.

Willa is terrified of uncertainty. She’s comparing herself to people whose lives seem more settled, questioning her choices & desperately looking for a future that makes sense. The scenario changes again & again, but the problem at its core stays the same.

And that’s what I love about Rachel Harrison. There’s always something deeply human underneath her horror—a fear, flaw or insecurity her female protagonist is carrying—& the horror becomes part of how she confronts it. Somehow, no matter how bizarre things get, the character study never gets lost underneath.

Add Harrison’s vivid writing, witty dialogue & dry humour & I am completely along for the ride. Every book of hers explores a different corner of horror while still feeling unmistakably hers.

This one didn’t quite reach 5 ⭐️ territory for me. The chaos was occasionally a little too much—but I finished it in three days, had an absolute blast & will never get tired of Harrison’s writing.

I’m definitely leaving the reception very happy. 💐
