Best of Saki (2007)

Folio Society edition. A collection of H. H. Munro’s sharp, witty short stories— his Edwardian social satire and dark comic tales of manners, cruelty, and surprise twists. The best of the bunch is "Sredni Vashtar." It's about a sickly boy who develops a dark religion around a polecat-ferret. by @timx13

Weird Tales Summer (1990)

A revival issue from Terminus Publishing, artwork by Frank Kelly Freas. I honestly don't remember how I have this. I have no memory of buying it or ordering it, so maybe it was a gift. Contains some nice stories and killer art. I recall the story "#20" being very creepy. by @timx13

Viriconium (2000)

M. John Harrison’s loosely linked far-future fantasy cycle set in and around the decaying city of Viriconium, where medieval-seeming politics, ruin, plague, and remnants of lost technology create a dreamlike, unstable world.

There's a character named Tomb the dwarf. Tomb gets an exoskeleton and it's awesome. by @timx13

The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian (2003)

“Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.”

The first volume in the fully illustrated Howard Conan series, collecting the earliest Conan stories plus related material, with a focus on the character’s original, unedited pulp adventures.

The anthology traces Conan from thief and pirate to king across Howard’s Hyborian Age stories, emphasizing sword-and-sorcery action, dark sorcery, and the clash between barbarism and civilization. by @timx13

Sesqua Valley & Other Haunts (2008)

A collection of Lovecraftian and Clark Ashton Smith–influenced horror and dark fantasy stories set in Pugmire’s eerie fictional Sesqua Valley, where outsider intrusion, desire, obsession, and gothic decay recur as central themes. Strange and beautiful prose. by @timx13

The Spider vs. The Empire State (2009)

I enjoy '30s pulp novels and my favorite of the bunch is a very strange and intense character called The Spider. Pre-comic book handsome millionaire (Richard Wentworth) who waged a one-man war on crime as the Spider: a hunchbacked, sharp toothed, long-haired, cape-wearing, pistol-packing vigilante.

The Spider's opps weren't petty criminals, they were city destroyers. Releasing plagues, killing millions, turning people into monsters. It's wild stuff with insane stakes.

This book is a complete reprint of the 1938 three-part “Black Police Trilogy.” A Spider adventure in which Wentworth fights a fascist criminal regime that seizes control of New York State, turning the city into a violent police state.

It's a somewhat prescient Depression-era political thriller, mixing superhero pulp, anti-fascist allegory, and siege-story action in a way that helped cement The Spider’s cult reputation. by @timx13

When the Stars Are Right: Towards an Authentic R’lyehian Spirituality (2014)

Lovecraftian nonfiction that blends essay, manifesto, and occult speculation to argue for a modern, “R’lyehian” way of thinking about cosmic horror, spirituality, and humanity’s place in an indifferent universe. As far as religions go, you could do worse than R’lyehian spirituality. by @timx13

Dark Archives: A Librarian’s Investigation into the Science and History of Books Bound in Human Skin (2021)

Examines anthropodermic bibliopegy—books bound in human skin—by tracing the histories of specific volumes, the people associated with them, and the scientific methods used to test whether such books are authentic. There aren't as many skin-bound books as you'd hope. by @timx13

W.B. Yeats volume one the poems (1989)

Gathers Yeats’s early poetry from his juvenilia through his first substantial book of verse, showing the shift from Romantic and classically inflected pieces toward Irish myth, esotericism, and nationalist themes.

I became interested in Yeats due to his occult connections, but I grew to really appreciate his poetic storytelling.

For example, check out this positively cosmic horror take on the Annunciation of Christ:

"The threefold terror of love; a fallen flare
Through the hollow of an ear;
Wings beating about the room;
The terror of all terrors that I bore
The Heavens in my womb."
