The dark side of the American Dream… just off Regent Street. Today’s the last chance to see these rare and iconic original artworks by Ralph Steadman in the flesh - ‘Out of Line’ closes tonight at 5pm.

‘It’s so difficult for one as disgruntled and uptight as me to become a tourist.,’ wrote Steadman of a trip to the US in 1984. ‘Be a tourist!’ I said, ‘Go on – look gaga at everything. Relax. Enjoy the view. Make color slides you can be justly proud of on those long winter evenings. Delight your friends back home with fun stories. Hire a car and get about. This is no time to relax’ I cautioned my wife, ‘You are with me to help seek out the bitter truth not to enjoy yourself. This is an assignment.’

Shrieks and giggles have been coming from the sold-out Early Works section of the gallery all week - particularly in front of Picture of an Ink-Soaked Hairy Spider with Hiccups. Should we make a screenprint from it??

Other favourites from the 1950s and 1960s include It’s a Cooker!, Please Don’t Laugh and Bless You! Not to mention A Proper Hell’s Angel, of which we have indeed created a signed screenprint in an edition of 10 (available to purchase via the link in bio - on the @tin.man.art online print store).

‘Out of Line’, the first selling show of Steadman originals in 30 years, continues this weekend at TIN MAN ART, 31 St George’s Street, London W1S 2FJ (11am-7pm Saturday, 11am-5pm Sunday).

A painting so ‘gloriously grotesque’ that booksellers insisted on covering it with a ‘modesty jacket’...

Anthony Bourdain’s Appetites: A Cookbook (2016) contains angry rants about Caesar salads, ugly-beautiful photographs of food and a dessert chapter that opens with the words: ‘Fuck dessert’.

Ralph Steadman’s cover artwork features layers of acrylic atop Indian ink, linework and collage.

The painting is for sale as part of ‘Out of Line’, the first selling exhibition of Steadman originals in 30 years (in London until 11th October). Contact @tin.man.art for enquiries.

A strangely animalistic tree, growing the heads of Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan, was a commission from Rolling Stone magazine in 1978.

Ralph Steadman was often in America in the 1970s, from the infamous Kentucky Derby to Dallas, Texas, where another job for Rolling Stone saw him draw three very different, poignant figures, fenced in on their porch.

‘Out of Line’ is the first selling exhibition of Steadman’s original works in 30 years. Contact @tin.man.art for enquiries.

The Peacekeepers are Coming! is now available to collect as a stamped giclée print in 2 sizes:

Small: 29.5 x 41.5 cm, £275 ex VAT
Large: 41.8 x 59.2 cm, £300 ex VAT

Link in bio to purchase via the TIN MAN ART print store.

Ralph Steadman created The Peacekeepers are Coming! in response to the controversial US military invasion of the Caribbean island nation of Grenada in 1983, but the message is timeless. Strangely, when it was shown at various museums across the US a few years ago, it was the children who were entranced - they could always be found in crowds gathered around it.

The original work in ink and permanent marker is also available for purchase and is currently on display in our exhibition ‘Out of Line’ (TIN MAN ART, 31 St George Street, London W1, until 11th October).

St George never killed the dragon, cherubs choke on smoke and ‘Maggie’s was a virgin birth’. These are creatures of the wilds and weirdness of Britain, as seen through the eyes of Ralph Steadman.

In The Adoration of the Maggie (1983), Steadman mimics the structure of Leonardo da Vinci’s 1481 painting Adoration of the Magi, filling his with Cabinet sycophants and the issues of Thatcher’s time as Prime Minister.

Fast forward 20 years to Pastoral Scene (c.2004), where nostalgic, idyllic Britain jars uncomfortably with modernity.

Come and see these artworks and more at ‘Ralph Steadman: Out of Line (Original Works 1961-2016)’, until 11th October at 31 St George Street, London W1S 2FJ (Mon-Sat 11am-7pm, Sun 11am-5pm).
