Today, I am working on the character of Julia Domna, the Syrian empress who ruled the Roman Empire alongside Septimius Severus during the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD.
It is known that Julia adopted the fashion of Faustina the Younger, wife of Marcus Aurelius, which was later used as a reference to maintain the idea of the Roman legacy.
The curious thing is that Julia managed to become a Roman fashion icon, mainly through her use of wigs, which has meant that we do not know what type of hair she had and whether she decided to always wear it in the Roman style or to maintain her traditions.

Putting a face to a name; or at least a concept. A few seconds of work that takes several hours (on this occasion, I’m taking advantage of being at university to record it). Who said drawing a person’s face would be easy? Why does perspective change this man’s age? #caracalla #projectCaracalla #art #artblog ? #romanempire by @tinaloxan

“Wouldn’t you like…?” 🐅

The frescoes of her palace are proposed as if she were the queen who controls the beasts on her island (she reminded me of the Potnia Theron, although in the Homeric remains it is Artemis and Aphrodite that are referred to in the title). Mostly because of her ability to shapeshift people and turn them into monsters and end up controlling them; kind of like she did to Scylla.

🔥The Eternal Flame of Rome🔥

From Phase III of Lacial culture, around 770-730/720 b. C we find the presence of the temple of Vesta, originally being a circular hut in which, inside the cella we find the penalties (relicary of sacred objects) and the focus, (home fire).

Legend has it that the fire was guarded by the Vestales, priestesses of Vesta, goddess of home and fire. This was renewed every first of March, we always keep the embers to reactivate it. Once finished, the ashes were laced to the Tiber River.
