Hey There, Blue Bird, Why Do You Chirp? By Sue Irwin, illustrated by Agnieszka Wajda

For fans of Eric Carle’s Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See, comes a fresh, new board book for young children about twelve animals who answer questions about the sounds they make. Children will see how even animals can thank God and praise Him and learn their colors along the way! The rhyming text and whimsical illustrations will make this a favorite among little ones.

This book publishes Aug. 4th, 2026, available for preorder. #boardbookreview #childrensbook #faithbasedbooksforkids #christianbookforkids #sueirwin by @tinamcho

The World Cup might be over, but soccer fans can read Christina Diaz Gonzalez’s graphic novel, OFFSIDE, illustrated by Mari Costa. The middle school’s soccer team is going to be coed, and some are doing all they can to prevent it. The team learns to work together not only to win the game but to use their voices to repair an old soccer field still in use. Some text is in Spanish to reflect the bilingual nature of the students and their parents. A glossary of soccer terms is at the end for those of us who don’t play. And I love the first line of Christina’s author note! This middle grade graphic novel is a win!

If you want a crowd of kids at your bookstore, these MN bookstores know what to do. At @wildrumpusbookstore , they have a kid-sized door, 2 chinchillas, 2 cats, birds, and lizards. At @redballoonbookshop they have a giant red balloon. I signed THE PRINCESS AND THE GRAIN OF RICE at both stores. I love how these stores have children’s authors & illustrators present! Thank you to local author, @mcdivittlindsey, for showing me around! @fsgyoungreaders @honeej @gracekendallbooks by @tinamcho

Unbreakable: A Japanese American Family In An American Incarceration Camp by Minoru Tonai & Jolene Gutierrez, illustrated by Chris Sasaki

This poignant picture book begins with young Minoru who is given a smooth hard stone from his father for strength as he’s taken away. Soon “Min” and all of his family are sent to an incarceration camp in the desert after the U.S. declares war on Japan. No lovely stones at the camp. Only sand that gets into his food and eyes. Min desperately wants to be reunited with his father. I love that the authors collaborated to tell Tonai’s story. All kids should learn about this harrowing period of American history. Yet the authors tell it in such a kid-friendly way. Sasaki’s digital illustrations tug at your heart and make this a book kids will want to pick up.

Back matter includes further information about this time period, a time line, author notes, questions for children, and resources which include one of my critique partner’s husband’s project known as densho.org! @writerjolene @christopher_sasaki @denshoproject @sara.yamasaki #picturebookreview #picturebooklove #japaneseincarceration #denshoproject by @tinamcho

Shim Jung Takes the Dive by Julia Riew

Family and friendship themes entwine in this captivating tale! This middle grade novel is based on a Korean folktale that Julia Riew has rewritten and expanded upon in exciting ways. In this novel, Jung is about to do her important dive as all daughters of hae women on the fictional New Samhan island do, however, she falls into the ocean and finds herself in the dragon queendom in which she is captured. The story is inspired by haenyo, the diving women in Korea which also inspired The Ocean Calls!

I came upon Riew a few years ago when her post about a Korean princess went viral. It inspired me to write my own Korean princess story, which ended up being The Princess and the Grain of Rice! In my back matter, I mention Julia Riew’s post and the thoughtful work she’s doing surrounding representation and the importance of kids seeing themselves in stories. In the acknowledgements of Riew’s novel, she mentions her viral post & thanks those who shared it. Unknowingly to Riew, I am one of those :)

For fans of Korean culture, haenyeo, and dragons, read this book! @juliariew @adriagoetz #haenyeo #middlegradebookstagram #asianrepresentation by @tinamcho

Who’s ready for a book about kimchi?
Barnes & Noble is having a 25% discount on preorders now through Friday, 6/26 for premium members. (Becoming a member is free.)

Preorders help with sales ranking and momentum for a forthcoming book.
If you preorder The Kimchi Fridge written by me, illustrated by Cindy Kang, I’ll email you the recipe for how I make bulgogi sweet potato pizza, which my family dearly misses from Korea. It’s a mashup of several recipes put together. This book publishes Oct. 6th.

“Delicious fun.” Kirkus Reviews, STARRED REVIEW

On a cold day, Mina wants to warm up with a bowl of her Omma’s kimchi stew. But when she slides to the kimchi fridge . . . It’s empty! Text the aunties and neighbors, it’s kimjang time! Soon Mina’s home is filled with the warmth of laughter, family, and friendship as everyone gathers to make their own batch of mouth-watering kimchi. But when Mina realizes that her kimchi needs time to ferment and won’t be ready to eat for months, what can she do to satisfy her craving?

From the author of Rice From Heaven and The Ocean Calls, comes a joyful, laugh-out-loud kimchi adventure filled with Korean food, k-pop dances, a great recipe, and a loving reminder that good things come to those who wait.

If you preordered from any store or online, message me w/your proof of purchase, and I’ll send you my recipe.
THANK YOU!

My picture book pick of the week: The Ocean Calls by @tinamcho and @jessxsnow. This is a beautiful story about a young Korean girl who wants to be a haenyeo diver like her grandma. The book explores the traditions of the haenyeo (affectionately known as granny mermaids) and their relationship with the sea. The illustrations are stunning! by @tinamcho

Thank you, Des Moines Public Library North Side, for inviting me to your story time! I had fun reading THE PRINCESS & THE GRAIN OF RICE to over 20 kids & caretakers. I showed them how tiny a grain of rice is, taught them the “deep bow,” let them pet Mouse from the story, and do a craft that illustrator Honee Jang helped design. @honeej @fsgyoungreaders @mackidsbooks @gracekendallbooks by @tinamcho

Hubby is working in Iowa City this wk so I joined today. I was curious about this UNESCO writing city! First, I had a little tour of the city from author @katherinelhouse. Found & signed my PRINCESS & THE GRAIN OF RICE at @prairielightsbooks, and @iowacitypubliclibrary had most all of my books! Great job! Met up with my husband for delicious Korean kalbi & Japanese food at @ramenbelly1010 . Our hotel hosts an Iowa Writers Library with a shelf of Pulitzer Prize winners who have been associated with Iowa! Maybe their greatness will rub off on me 🤣 by @tinamcho
