For Sickle Cell Awareness Month I teamed up with Be The Match to document and share my Sickle Cell and Bone Marrow Transplant journey! 💚💙

You can watch by copy and pasting the link below into your browser or by clicking the link in my bio!

I am a sickle cell warrior. I suffered a stroke at eight, which left me paralyzed from the waist down for over three months. It took physical therapy and a lot of determination to get me back walking again. Throughout the years, I have faced many medical complications due to sickle cell including blindness, hearing loss, pain crisis and joint damage.

Growing up with Haitian immigrant parents, because of a language barrier, I had to bridge the gap between my parents and doctors. By researching my disease, I was able to help my parents understand my sickle cell so they could make more informed decisions about my care. I educated myself on bone marrow transplants and how they are a cure for sickle cell. The possibility of finding an unrelated donor on the Be The Match Registry® gave me a renewed sense of hope. I was finally able to undergo the bone marrow transplant in 2020. Learn more at https://www.sicklecellconnect.com/.

I’ve been waiting a whole year for this article to come out, and it has finally been published. I consider myself an advocate because it is so important to me that sickle cell gets the attention that it needs and deserves! After being admitted to the hospital last week, it only reminded me of how much more advancements and research is needed to be done for the livelihood of our sickle cell patients. Every health care worker, no matter administrative or clinical, can play a role to improve patient outcomes. This article will be available in the July issue of the Professional Case Management (Vol. 23, No. 4, 213-219) Journal. My ultimate goal is to limit the apprehensiveness of seeking help; strength is not so much optional, but sometimes warriors need a break. I urge you guys to check it out and see how you can contribute to the overall health of not only the sickle cell patient, but every patient. It was a pleasure working on this with a few boss women at Duke University School of Nursing! •

*Praise Break* The start of this year has been the toughest for me. My friends, family, and even a few of my classmates, you guys know! I began to lose my vision in my right eye. I had a retinal detachment, and bleeding due to sickle cell. The damage and vision loss became so severe that I had to put everything on hold, have open eye surgery, and endure three months of recovery. I became so discouraged, upset that I couldn’t start my job in February, and even scared that my vision would not return. When I tell you that my support system is big, and my God is even bigger!! All of this to say that no matter what battle you are fighting, never lose sight of your goals and dreams. Even if you can’t see that light at the end of the tunnel, it’s there, just be patient. You’ll see it eventually. During recovery, I had to find other ways to study and stay on track because I couldn’t read with one functioning eye for more than a few minutes before having pain and getting dizzy. My friends would literally read study material to me, cook for me, drive me to every appointment that I had because I couldn’t, and that’s not even the half. It’s rare to find that in friendships, I’m so lucky. I can’t forget about my mentors as well. For that, I am forever grateful. I took a leap of faith and took my NCLEX this week. I had to have a reader literally read every test question and answer choice to me; I can not begin to tell you guys how difficult that was for me, but all that matters now is that I can add these two letters behind my name. It’s Christina Augustin, RN now 🙌🏾It took everything out of me to share this (excuse my surgery braids), but if it could help someone else, then that is all that matters. @king.augustin once told me “Everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay, it's not the end”, and I certainly stand true by that statement! I can’t wait to start doing what I love this summer. Anyone who knows me know that I am a strong believer of speaking things into existence. Just to think that over a year ago when I first mentioned Duke as an institution that I wanted to attend, so many doubted my capabilities of thriving in an accelerated program at a prestigious university due to my illness. Three weeks into the program, I had to have emergency surgery (plus many hospitalizations thereafter); so imagine, it only sparked up more conversation about how I should consider putting this journey on hold. My faith in God and resilient character led me to this moment. I have a story to tell, and soon I will share it with the world. Duke University School of Nursing will always hold a special place in my heart. Next stop, Emory Healthcare, where I will be working as a Bone Marrow Transplant Nurse. My sickle cell family, this is for us 💙 #TwoDegrees #PriceBeenUp #SickleCellWarrior #ForMyZoes #DukeNurse taken in Duke University School of Nursing by @tinaofficial
