Autumn is rolling in @kewgardens autumn 🍂 🍁
Today’s highlights were the champion liquidambar tree on the Broad Walk, Leaf Spirit in the Woodland Garden, a great display of squash plus a recipe chalked up on the board in the vegetable garden, morning views up to the Temple of Pan, and bustle everywhere to prepare the garden for the winter.

This slightly crumpled young man is thought to be Dr William Hood, superintendent of Bedlam Royal Hospital, painted by Richard Gadd in 1853. Hood is credited with introducing small human touches that made a huge difference to the people in his care - soft furnishings, carpets, a garden, and art supplies. He encouraged Richard Gadd, a Royal Academician, to continue painting when he was admitted to hospital.

Gadd spent more than 40 years in Bedlam and in Broadmoor. This exhibition showcases his talent, his extraordinary imagination, and his versatility, including intricately detailed paintings of imagined fairylands, beautifully observed watercolours and sketches from his travels through the Middle East, amusing cartoons and caricatures, still life, and designs for stage sets for productions at Broadmoor Hospital.

Last few weeks. Closes on 25 October.

One of London’s most beautiful green walks. 8.5 miles / 13.5 kms on a perfect September day. Starting at Putney and ending with a well-earned ice cream in the sunshine on Richmond Green. All easily accessible by tube. Allow 4 to 5 hours, including a leisurely pitstop in Barnes.

@burghhouse1704 today. One of my favourite places for art, music and a fabulous cafe. Tube: Hampstead. Open: Weds, Thurs, Fri, Sun. Free to visit.

Sitting on the terrace in the warm September sunshine I thought of Gertrude Jekyll who was commissioned to redesign the garden in 1911. Although little remains, the planting reflects her plant lists.

There are also several small exhibitions to explore in the warm and welcoming C18 house. An eclectic mix of artworks by Donald Towner, who lived in #hampstead for 50 years, including views of Hampstead gardens and streets, advertising for the UK Travel Association, and a hopeful painting of St Paul’s Cathedral standing firm in the rubble after the Blitz. The exhibition runs until 13 December.

Imagine being a rookie metal detectorist unearthing this 24 carat gold Tudor pendant from a muddy field in Warwickshire. Acquired by the British Museum, the nation received an exquisite treasure linked with Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon. And under the Treasure Act 1996 both the finder and the farmer split the value 50/50, receiving a life-changing windfall.

I love the chunky chain, made with intricate interlocking gold rings, and the hand reaching down to hold the pendant with H and K intertwined. It’s engraved with the word ‘tousiors’ - old French for ‘always’. The other side shows a Tudor rose and Katherine of Aragon’s symbol the pomegranate.

Made over 500 years ago and found in 2019, it’s a mystery how this beautiful necklace landed in a farmer’s field - perhaps dropped, perhaps hidden - but it is now on display in Room 2 @britishmuseum

2. Super helpful staking workshop with Neil Ross
3. Advice on clover lawns and gardening on the wild side from @chrishullgardens Very useful given that I’ve acquired a substantial clover lawn this year!
4. Loved the heap of rubbish garden
5. Borders bursting with dahlias, miscanthus and cosmos
6. Playful touches and structures at every turn

Looking forward to my next visit to @yeoorganicgarden - compost workshop!
