Was off to a great start when I finally managed to take the Overlander all the way to Melbourne. I met a new friend, Dave pretty soon after and we ended up doing the whole ride together.   I reached out to my friend Nigel to catch up and he ended up joining us for three days of climbing until Bendigo. He did more than his share of hike a bike and got me through the Goldfields track.  
As we rode from one big town to another, each with a rail connection to Melbourne I never felt too far from the start until about halfway through the trip.

There seemed to be at least three versions of the River Murray we then rode through: the long edge of Gunbower Island (apparently the largest inland island in Australia), the citrus growing Riverland and the touristy Riverland that transitioned almost seamlessly into the Barossa Valley.   I planned it to be a generously paced 10-11 days and was proud to have stayed pretty much on schedule. With what I know now about the availability of camping though and especially during a couple of memorably long stretches, there was room to take it a little easier next time.
 We were lucky with the weather and even luckier with the kindness of people on the way. In Manangatang we had a pub that reassured us they’d stay open if we got in late, and in Blanchetown the pub got together to find us accomodation when there was none available. Words of support from our little community of Dirty Valda riders was constant, and running into them en route was a highlight (with a resupply if you were lucky enough to run into @themagicalwhiterhino !)  Thanks to @curvecycling and April @aprilawol for setting the route, it was the sign, push and assurance I needed to get started.
