The Hagia Sofia - both an architectural marvel and a bastion of history, the Hagia Sofia was constructed nearly one and a half millennia ago, initially serving its term as a Byzantine cathedral and designed by Greek mathematicians Isidore and Anthemius. By 1453, it began undergoing conversion into a mosque after Ottoman forces transformed Constantinople into Istanbul. Minarets were added to the structure, but efforts to preserve its initial Christian heritage were made and seen as an important aspect by Sultan Mehmed. Thus, remnants of Byzantine and Christian art are wonderfully preserved - take a look at the ceiling and one will find Seraphim, Mother Mary, Father Joseph, and Jesus depicted in motifs alongside calligraphic inscriptions of Allah. taken in Hagia Sophia by @tinstraveling

A series of Turkish entrances - as you’ll notice, the photos that I’ve taken of entrances (around Topkapi and various mosques) have gorgeous inscriptions at the top. These are known as Tarihs, and are written in a form of Turkish-adapted Arabic during Ottoman reign. Such Tarihs hold significant religious and political messages, intended to interweave the legitimacy of the Ottoman courts and political structure with Islam. The beautiful calligraphic styling of the Tarihs differ as we move throughout time, with different centuries of Otroman rule coinciding with a different ways Tarihs are displayed. Typical religious messages include “Muhammad is the messenger of Allah”, written by legendary calligraphers such as Ali bin Yahya Sofi, Mustafa Rakim, and others. #türkiye #topkapi #bosphorus #mosques #islamicart taken in Istanbul Türkiye by @tinstraveling

Scenes of Wat Arun, Thailand - what I find fascinating about this temple is the incredible manner in which the art of diplomacy is embedded in the architecture. While there is a towering Prang in the center, which is typical of a temple from the Ayutthaya period and overlaps with Khmer style as well, it also incorporates architecture typically found in the Rattanakosin era. This latter era blends architectural styles found in southern China, which have made their impact on Thai architecture via trade and state convoys. Porcelain that acted as ballast on these Chinese ships visiting Thailand can be found throughout the temple. #thailand #bangkok #watarun #chaophraya #architecture #travel taken in Wat Arun Temple วัดอรุณราชวราราม by @tinstraveling
