Come with me to the grand opening of @opalandmoonstudio in @downtowndurham! ✨

If you drove by Salon Lofts the past few years and saw a fun and colorful studio in the front window, that was Opal and Moon! They recently upgraded their space and have their own studio now! The vibes are immaculate, so much natural light, and plenty of free parking nearby!

Megan and Justine are truly the best. I have been coming here for my hair for the last three years and I have nothing but great things to say. My hair always looks amazing and they pride themselves on making everyone feel safe and welcome 🩷

Yearly check your neck post 🦋

Today- I am 11 years out from my thyroid cancer surgery. I’m posting this because every year, at least one person messages me to say that they or someone they know found out they have thyroid cancer or need to have a biopsy and are looking for some support. The average age is 51.

I was 24, healthy, and had never had a thyroid problem when I found out I had thyroid cancer. I found it because of a visible large bump in my neck.

Thyroid cancer is almost 3x more common in women than men. ✨ more funding for women’s health research ✨

It’s also one of the more treatable cancers when caught early. The most common type has a 5yr survival rate of over 99%. Surgery is the main treatment, and for some radioactive iodine is used afterward because thyroid cells eat iodine, allowing the treatment to easily target remaining thyroid cells. (Looking back it was kinda cool- the pill comes in this special lead container and then you get locked in your room for a few days)

My thyroid was removed. along with my parathyroid and multiple lymph nodes. I knew my prognosis was good, but because of how mine presented, recurrence was something I was told I would need to monitor the rest of my life.

And today at my follow up- 11 years later, I finally reached the milestone where my doctor said routine ultrasounds are no longer necessary- and we’re just monitoring with labs and exams :)

What I didn’t understand at 24 was what it meant to suddenly live without a thyroid. To go from being healthy and never thinking about this tiny but mighty organ to being hypothyroid and dependent on medication every single day.

Years ago I wrote down that I was “learning how to manage life without a thyroid.”

Today, I’m always learning. Learning to give my body the space to live and love. Sometimes I’m more lethargic. Sometimes my hair starts falling out or my weight fluctuates.

I’m grateful. I’m healthy. I’m here.
I’ve learned along the way that Rest is necessary, energy is a precious, and you need your people 🧡

So my yearly reminder: to check your neck. I’ve included some slides of what to look for and how to do your own exam🦋 taken in Durham, North Carolina by @tiny_cowlick
