The garden where these pink anemones bloom is no longer there. Destroyed for road maintenance. In its place, piles of concrete slabs, metal fences and machines. A cruel reminder of just how quickly something beautiful can disappear.

When I first moved to Vancouver, I made East Van my home. You can say I chose it, or you can say it chose me. It makes no difference.

Someone who I used to know, showed me The Steps, a high, wooden staircase on the back of an old school. To the common eye, they might have seamed like no big deal, they were just stairs, but if you climbed to the highest platform on a hot, summer evening, you could see the entire city draped with the most beautiful sunset. You could crack a beer, share a few slices and just take in the beauty of the city, our city.

Since those early days, I have taken a couple people there, I have also gone by myself to just escape it all. I will never forget the person who first brought me here. They probably won’t ever know how important it felt to me to be shown somewhere secret in a city of thousands. To explore somewhere seemingly pointless, only to find something extraordinary. This post goes out to the explorers. Continue to dream. Keep looking for the beauty in this city.
