reconfiguring rivers | each droplet; siphoned from a London waterway, trained into a sphere and made to rain again in an orchestrated precipitation of sorts. • This year, I've been working with orbs of ice in several performance installations | This has meant collecting the water from selected sources, experimenting with precise freezing points, countless hours of listening to, timing and recording single droplets of water as they fall again under gravity. • These ice orbs featured in a performance installation responding to Helen Frosi’s brilliant publication ‘aspects of the morning’ released by Oxford Brookes University and launched at Cafe Oto. The performance also featured environmental recordings, spoken word and a ‘psithurism’ of voices from the Cafe Oto Experimental Choir. #precipitate by @tinysound

Over the past days, Australian sound artist Brigitte Hart @tinysound has been following a loose trail through Timișoara, from crystal growth laboratories and flea markets to other encounters with the city’s technological and material histories. Working together with local artist Dorian Bolca @dorianbolca, she is tracing connections between water, light, radio relics and technological remains as part of her ongoing research, Rivers, Relics, Radiation. Their collaboration brings Brigitte’s sound-based practice into dialogue with Dorian’s work across lighting design, light art and visual experimentation. Australian sound artist Brigitte Hart is in Timișoara until 28 July as part of a new international co-production between SIMULTAN and @iklectikartlab. Over the next two weeks, her research will unfold through conversations, field recordings and encounters across the city, tracing connections between rivers, radio relics and the archaeology of technology in and around Timișoara. Today, we visited the Crystal Growth, Crystal Characterisation and X-ray Diffraction Laboratories at the Physics Department of the West University of Timișoara @uvt_romania. Guided by physicist Gabriel Bușe and researcher Marina Poenar, we learned how single crystals are grown from a tiny seed crystal, how their internal structures are analysed, and how they become important components in technologies ranging from lasers and LEDs to radiation detectors. Brigitte will share more about her practice and the research developed in Timișoara during an artist talk on July 25, 19:00, at @it.a.space.for.it. Muons, quarks, bosons, gravitons and other tiny matters of matter, dark matter and antimatter | I recently had the privilege and joy of visiting CERN, Geneva, representing @shortwavecollective with fellow Nerd @georgialeighmuenster, presenting our work with radio as artistic material and the electromagnetic commons | A particular dream come true | ~ thank you for making that happen @cernideasquare and @schoolofcommons ~ I was also unaware that CERN was and is a peace project, envisioned after WWll in response to the divisions of war and the rise of sinister world-impacting nuclear technologies. It is an ongoing open-source project concerned with scientific diplomacy and unification in the face of rampant hyper-capitalist patented technologies and privatised data and resources. Excited to share some installation shots from the 🥾Beneath Our Footsteps 🥾 exhibition at @no1churchlane! Beneath Our Footsteps is a collaborative project inspired by the hidden Philley Brook river, developed in collaboration with sound artist Brigitte Hart @tinysound, psychogeographer John Rogers @thelostbyway, and equalities designer and researcher Natasha Trotman @trottykins, alongside other incredible local practitioners. As part of the exhibition, we showcased: 🗺️ A window projection of the GPS-tracked route of the ‘Digi Photo + Sound Walk’ event in Aug 2024; 🎧 A sound piece produced by Brigitte Hart with sounds recorded during the ‘Digi Photo + Sound Walk’ using a range of various devices, including a hydrophone (dipped into the river through rain drains and gutters), a geophone (to capture traffic and water vibrations), and an electromagnetic antenna (used to detect signals from the green electric boxes on the streets); 🌳 3D scans collected along the Philley Brook river route during the ‘Digi Photo + Sound Walk’; 🌊 3D terrain displacement map renderings from the ‘We Are Philley Brook’ workshop at Some Kind of Hack Space with @artillery_arts in Sept 2024; 🫲 A Sensory Synopsis providing a multi-sense-based creative exploration of the hidden Philley Brook river, developed by Natasha Trotman as part of the ‘We Are Philley Brook’ workshop at Some Kind of Hack Space; ⚙️ A collection of the artefacts found next to St. Andrew’s Church in Upper Leytonstone, where the river flows underground; 👾 A collaborative web-based artwork created with contributions from local residents. Throughout the past few months, we at Compiler have been working with different groups of local residents to creatively rediscover the lost Philley Brook river, which runs beneath the streets of Upper Walthamstow, Leytonstone, and Leyton. In collaborating with sound artist Brigitte Hart, psychogeographer John Rogers, and equalities designer and researcher Natasha Trotman, amongst other local practitioners, we have delivered a series of creative workshops and guided walks.
