🌀Verse 5 of Pepeha @tipenemusic

Pepeha is a waiata that brings our Māori oral traditions of Pepeha, of speaking life into our foundations, our place to stand, who we come from and where we belong into the vibe and style of today.

In our Pepeha, we acknowledge our sacred mountains, our rivers, our tribal territories and our tribal affiliations in a way that binds us to our people and our environment. When we share our Pepeha we share who we are and those we belong to.

We created this song together to engage with our Pepeha, to walk our whenua, to dive in our moana, climb our maunga and swim our awa. We hope this inspires other to bring their Pepeha to life!

“ I am Ngāti Kahungunu clan on the east coast
Waka Takitimu land I te taha taku whaea Ngāti Porou
Everybody know they say hearty the bro he’s a coastie
Loud and proud Tipene bay they know me
Tūturu to the cause never lowkey, Tamatea Arikinui yeh Māori
Whakapapa carve waka from a kauri Is he blue? Is he red?
No he’s Ngāti Whatuiapiti bred!
Poukawa Tika tonu with the raps I haka Sounds like Rongomaipapa
Heretaunga haukunui
Heretaunga ararau
Heretaunga haaro o te Kaahu
Ko Te Rangikoianake te hāpu
he whakapapa Māori tāku” ~Tipene

🥇TAUTOKO – GOLD Tautoko means support. This album started in one of the hardest times of my life. After losing my mum, I reached out for help to raise pūtea for her unveiling. What started there became something much bigger. I put out the tono, and people showed up.

Whānau, Flaxmere, artists I grew up listening to, producers, musicians, friends and people who barely knew what we were trying to create. We made videos in our neighbourhood.

We celebrated our people. We honored the pioneers of Aotearoa hip hop. None of us knew where it would lead. We were just expressing ourselves, standing up for our dreams, our neighbourhoods and our people. And now Tautoko is Gold.

One of the greatest lessons this album taught me is that asking for help takes courage. Especially as Tane, as Māori, we can feel like we are supposed to carry everything ourselves. We don’t. If you need Tautoko, reach out. And when someone puts out the tono, show up if you can.

To everyone who stood with me, this belongs to all of us. And to every small-town kid with a big dream, don’t let where you come from decide how far you can go. If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. Ngā mihi nui ❤️
