I got a DM from whaea Linda Munn overnight with a link to this petition in it. The petition asks to fly the Tino Rangatiratanga flag permanently on the Auckland Harbour Bridge alongside the New Zealand flag.

First of all, nōku te hōnore e te rangatira, e te māreikura. Haven't had a chance to catch up with you since Waitangi but what a beautifully timed reason.

Second of all, what a tīpuna-timed kaupapa.

In all the election year scramble, the noise is loud.

The collective wairua is full of anxiety, desperation, lies, anger, fear, manipulation but in lots of spaces I am fortunate to be in - hope.

Hope that we will change this government.

Hope that we are sick of the division.

Hope that we want change.

Hope that we will find unity.

I will put the link in my stories and in my linktree just under my bio but it's theflagpoll.nz

I was signatory #6,905 today.

You know the drill e te whānau. Let's get this petition to 80k 🫡🫡🫡 ✍️ ✍️ ✍️ - xoxo the W.H.G ⚔️ 💅 🥷

David Seymour @dbseymour and Winston Peters @winstonpetersnzfirst, who have both served as New Zealand's Deputy Prime Minister under @christopherluxon have argued that New Zealand’s emissions are too small to make a meaningful difference to global warming.

In June 2021, Seymour called New Zealand a “passenger” on climate change and said it would be “foolish” to lead the world on climate action.

Peters has invoked the same excuse: New Zealand produces just 0.17% of global emissions.

But Lawyers for Climate Action NZ points to a patently obvious flaw in their reasoning.

Countries individually responsible for less than 1% of global emissions collectively produce roughly 25% of the world's total. If everyone adopted their argument, a quarter of global emissions could be excused from reduction.

New Zealand produces approximately three times its population's proportional share of global emissions. If everyone emitted at our per capita rate, projected warming could reach approximately 5°C.

The International Court of Justice has rejected the idea that a country's relatively small contribution automatically absolves it of responsibility for climate harm.

Every tonne of CO₂ adds to warming. Every fraction of a degree matters. Seven of nine planetary boundaries have already been breached, yet the argument remains that our contribution is too small to matter.

No country can solve climate breakdown alone. But if every country uses that as an excuse to do nothing, collective action becomes impossible.

New Zealand's Hunting and Fishing Minister James Meager @jamesmeagermp has overseen a law change exempting introduced deer herds from the usual requirement to eradicate introduced animals in national parks.

The Game Animal Council (Herds of Special Interest) Amendment Act passed Parliament on 25 June 2026 and came into force on 1 July. Just 12 days later, Meager designated 190,700 hectares of Fiordland National Park, approximately 15% of the park, for special management of introduced wapiti deer for recreational hunting.

Forest & Bird warned that the policy sets a “dangerous precedent” and undermines the very purpose of protected conservation land.

Deer are destructive introduced browsing pests. They consume and trample native vegetation, prevent forest regeneration, degrade indigenous wildlife habitats and undermine forests' ability to absorb carbon.

Forest & Bird warns that even low deer populations can cause enormous ecological damage in ecosystems that evolved without large browsing mammals.

The government argues that hunter-led management can improve conservation outcomes, and the designation includes ecological objectives. But the law also explicitly removes the usual eradication requirement for these designated herds.

National parks are supposed to protect native ecosystems. This legislation instead makes an exception to maintain introduced game animals for hunting.

Meager's personal history has also attracted scrutiny. In a 2022 Stuff profile, he described his younger university self as “loud-mouthed, obnoxious and opinionated”. The article recounted an incident in which he threw a drink over another student, damaging their laptop. But Stuff insists he's been "upfront" so it's all good apparently?

Plastic now outweighs the combined dry weight of every animal on land and in the oceans. Yet New Zealand's Environment Minister Nicola Grigg @nicolagriggmp has abandoned plans for further restrictions on plastic packaging after meeting industry lobbyists.

An October 11, 2026 investigation by Andrea Vance, published in The Press, reveals that Grigg planned to introduce a new 2030 deadline to phase out hard-to-recycle plastic food packaging.

Documents released under the Official Information Act show officials had prepared advice recommending restrictions aligned with European Union rules. The proposal was subsequently abandoned following meetings with industry representatives.

A landmark 2020 Nature study found that humanity's manufactured materials had surpassed the biomass of all living organisms on Earth, while plastic alone outweighed the dry mass of every animal combined.

Plastic pollution is accumulating across ecosystems, contaminating food chains and threatening wildlife. Rather than confronting this escalating ecological crisis, New Zealand's government is retreating from restrictions on unnecessary plastic.

This is what happens when corporate interests take precedence over ecological survival. Recycling cannot solve a crisis driven by ever-increasing production and consumption. We must reduce material throughput at source.

Enrol to vote today @vote.nz amd kick this government out!
