Yesterday I attended @londonbergerak demonstration in solidarity with Indonesia 🇮🇩

There were so many powerful speeches, poems and performances; reminding us why we are proud to be Indonesian. Not because of our government, the military or the police. But the people who make it, with our determination, resilience and bravery.

I felt so proud to stand with my Indonesian people, making noise on behalf of our country, whose voices are trying to be silenced by the government. I grieve with my country, but I also acknowledge my privilege as I watch the horrors unfold through my phone; as diaspora abroad we must show up for our people more than ever. That means continuing the conversation and raising awareness, attending demos and sending aid via Grab/donating to organisations.

Yesterday the DPR addressed some of the demands that were put forward: Prabowo has since fired 1/7 officers involved in the murder of Affan Kurniawan, suspended overseas trips for the representatives, rescinded the additional housing allowance and pledged for further investigations.

This is a start, but there is still long way to go, especially addressing the TNI and ending state violence.

We are not free until all of us are free. This includes freeing West Papua and recognising it as an independent state.

Some shots from Mataram and Kuta, Lombok.

Lombok translated also means cabai, cabe or chilli. Indonesia is famous for its pedas (spicy) cuisine, from the use of fresh ground chillis making Sambals. My favourite is Sambal bacem, made from sweet boiled tempeh, coconut and rich spices. by @tirtashoots

Jakarta by day.

A mix of new and the remnants of the Old Town, formally known as Batavia under Dutch rule.

Throughout Jakarta’s history it has had many names under colonial rule: Sunda Kalapa, Jayakarta, Djajakarta, Jacatra and Batavia.

In the 17th August 1945 Indonesia declared independence, and on the 27 December 1949, the capital city was officially recognised under the name Jakarta. taken in Jakarta, Indonesia by @tirtashoots
