I thrifted a bag of vintage buttons the other day and knew I wanted to turn them into something fun.All I did was stretch strips of tape between two stools (sticky side facing up) to create little tape bridges then set out the buttons.My oldest knew exactly what to do because we’ve done this before with pom poms and little animal figures. This time the buttons made it feel completely new.Both of my kids stayed so focused carefully placing, rearranging, and filling every bit of sticky tape. It kept them busy far longer than I expected and was such a simple way to encourage fine motor skills, creativity, and independent play!Would your little one love this? I drew oversized letters on a giant sheet of paper and let my child use bingo dabbers / dot markers to fill them in. That’s it! Such a simple setup. It’s playful way to build early literacy while keeping little hands busy. As they dab along each letter they’re strengthening fine motor skills, hand eye coordination, pencil control, and letter recognition all through play! I knew this would keep them entertained. . . but I didn’t expect them to play for over an hour and keep coming back to it all day!!No expensive toys no complicated setup just an empty cardboard box and their imaginations.They covered it with drawings and scribbles before my son had the idea to turn it into a ramp for his cars and balls. Even after they moved on to other activities, they kept coming back to it throughout the day.So before you recycle your next cardboard box give your kids a chance to explore it first. I gave my 5 year old toothpicks and cut up pool noodles during quiet time.No instructions no example just the materials.At first he wasn’t sure what to do he just explored. Then slowly it became a crown then a monster haha. I thought he'd build a tower or some kind of sculpture! He noticed the texture of the toothpicks the sound they made going through the noodle and created something completely his own.It reminded me that kids don't always see materials the way we do and that's the magic of open ended play.Sometimes the goal isn't creating the perfect craft. If you’ve run out of paper don’t let that stop the fun grab a piece of cardboard instead! Both of my kids loved using paint sticks on it and it worked just as well.It’s such an easy way to reuse something you already have at home save a trip to the store and still encourage creativity through play.Simple budget friendly and one less thing to buy! This is why I stick to simple activities. With just two materials pipe cleaners and beads I set this up as a fine motor activity but within minutes they were making it their own. By the end they had turned the pipe cleaners into bracelets.That’s exactly why I love simple activities.
