Yesterday marked 129 years since the passing of William Morris.

William Morris was one of the most significant designers of the 19th century, with an influence that is very much still alive today. He was a renaissance man of many skills, including masterful works of poetry and novels, translating ancient mythology, embroidery, tapestry, furniture, carpets, stained glass, tiles, textiles, wallpaper, books, and type.

over 1,500 years.

In the summer of 1921, Stanley Morison (the design director behind Times New Roman) relocated from London to Manchester to join the Cloister Press. While he preferred paving stones over ‘daisy-sprinkled meadows’, the new location provided the opportunity to study at the John Rylands Library, which he did with frequency.

For more of the lives and works that inspired Stanley Morison, visit the John Rylands Library (@thejohnrylands) and listen to episode V of Titans of Type. taken in John Rylands Library, Manchester by @titansoftype

7 Lessons from Frederic Goudy, American Titan of Type:

1. Mastery in design doesn’t depend on an early start, but on a steady hand and relentless pursuit.

2. Honor, study, and befriend the masters of design. Let their voices guide your work.

3. Design at its best is not self-expression, but shared expression, giving shape to what we hold in common.

4. Cultivate taste through the study of all the arts; it shapes the finest craft.

5. Copy the method, not the appearance; understand the principles, not the style.

6. Criticism, if you let it, can refine your craft more than praise ever could.

7. The wise craftsman looks not for more clients, but for better ones. taken in RIT Cary Graphic Arts Collection by @titansoftype

2. To shape the everyday is to shape the spirit of an age.

3. Treat the smallest commission as if it could shape your life’s work, because it might.

4. The designer’s library is as important as his studio.

5. Avoid extremes; draw out the good wherever it is found.

6. Mastery belongs to those who notice everything.

7. The best design obeys rules as soldiers obey orders.
