We are a little over a week from NYBALF 2026, and this year we are at The Gatehouse, Harlem Stage for three days of conversations, performances, readings, workshops and encounters around the theme, The Village in the Book: Literature and the Near.

There is so much in the program to be excited about, and we are: Namwali Serpell on Toni Morrison; Conceição Evaristo on escrevivência and a literary life; Mahmood Mamdani on Uganda, citizenship and the postcolonial state; Noo Saro-Wiwa and Alexis Okeowo on the Niger Delta; Ibi Zoboi, Candice Iloh and Mahogany L. Browne on young readers and attention; Angela Flournoy and Myriam J. A. Chancy on the people we make family; Ozoz Sokoh and Ashanté Reese on food and gathering; Arie and Chuko Esiri on adapting literature into cinema; Black writing across Portuguese-speaking worlds; and an opening night of poetry that breaks us into the weekend.

We are grateful to the entire ecosystem of support, the institutions opening their doors to us, the writers, poets, scholars, teachers and artists who have said yes to being part of this.

Building a festival means living for months inside spreadsheets, emails, budgets, flight itineraries, venue plans and all the invisible work that sits behind a public gathering, and then the doors open and all of that disappears into people in a room, listening to one another. If you're in New York for the General Assembly or catching the tail of a New York summer for the books, swing by, and we'll be happy to welcome you.

On how I announced a world tour with just radical faith and vibes…the quiet belief that good things come to those who do not wait.

What goal are you no longer waiting for? Tell me here and I’ll be boosting and sharing. Your collaborator just might be here in the comments.

The village is gathering.

For the past couple of months, we’ve been building toward the second New York Black and African Literature Festival, imagining what it might mean to bring writers, poets, thinkers and artists from across Africa and its diasporas into the same room in New York, and to ask what literature can still make possible between us.

This year’s theme, The Village in the Book: Literature and the Near, centers the people, places, histories and obligations that become real to us when we attend closely enough.

We are excited to reveal the first set of guests who will be joining us in Harlem this September, selected across countries, traditions, generations and forms. More announcements coming.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who has helped build this festival from an idea into a growing cultural home in New York: our board, team, partners, friends, writers and communities who have believed in what it could become. And now, we want the village there.

Registration for NYBALF 2026 is officially open.

We'll be at the historic Harlem Gatehouse from September 18th. Come spend the weekend with us. Come listen, argue, read, discover, meet someone you didn’t know you needed to meet. Come gather.

We’re opening up event proposals and volunteer signups for the 2026 New York Black and African Literature Festival.

This year’s festival, The Village in the Book: Literature and the Near, will take place September 18th–20th in venues across Harlem, New York.

We’re thinking about what writers owe the communities that receive the work, and what becomes possible when literature is brought into closer contact with material conditions.

If you have an idea for a conversation, reading, workshop, performance, gathering, or community-centered program that speaks to this frame, please send it in.

We’re also opening up for volunteers and collaborators interested working with us on programming, production, hospitality, communications, documentation, and community outreach.

Proposal and volunteer links here: www.blackandafricanlitfestny.com/participate and follow @nyblackaflitfest for updates. taken in New York, New York by @titilope

Happy Africa Day 🖤

I have an unending belief in the people and places that raised me. I owe so much to the ones whose ideas continue to move our continent forward. I’m celebrating the artists, makers, storytellers, poets who find new and inventive ways to remind us who we are.

What are your stories of inspiration? Who are the people you know that are not waiting?
