100 supporters and allies. One very full room. A whole lot of history, heart, science—and disco.

At last night’s #LegacyProject Ottawa Take Off to Pride, Mayor @_marksutcliffe took us back to the early days of HIV/AIDS in Ottawa, including the story of Peter Evans, who became the first person in Canada to speak openly about living with AIDS in 1983.

Susan Margles reminded us why we were there: “We move people; CANFAR moves the science.”

Sonya Shorey spoke about belonging and the generations who will benefit from CANFAR’s work.

And Patrick O’Byrne (@getakit.ca) reflected on how far HIV prevention has come — from sero-sorting 25 years ago to PrEP, PEP and more options today. His reminder: “We have to remember how we got here.”

Then @j3msings brought the disco sparkle and declared: “There ain’t no party like a CANFAR party.” ✨ DJ @realjcinott kept the good vibes going with an energetic set throughout the evening!

Huge congrats to Charles, Julien and Kevin on their door prizes, and thank you @porterairlines, @aircanada, @fairmontqueene, and @pitbullevents for their generous donations. And much love to our presenting partner Ottawa International Airport Authority, and Partners in Pride @investottawa and Coke Canada Bottling Ottawa-Gatineau. 🩷

Last Friday, we teamed up with @queering613 for a Queers & Beers event at the @lowertownbrewery for an electric evening of dancing, drinks, drag, & community! We are so grateful to everyone who joined us for this #LegacyProject Ottawa event – seeing the community come together is what makes these events so special!

@rick_laplante @whiterabbitottawa created an incredible atmosphere & soundtrack for the evening, and 2S drag star @shea.d.ladie blew everyone away with some stunning performances!

The @getakit.ca team engaged ~50 people over 2 hours for vaccination, information awareness, and testing (swab delivery and registration), reminding us that knowing your status is a way we can all contribute to combatting HIV stigma! “I think it shows what can happen when public health, clinical services, and community come together.” – Patrick O’Byrne, Professor & Nurse Practitioner at the University of Ottawa, Head of GetaKit, CANFAR Research Cycle 31 Grant recipient

Thank you to our incredible co-chairs @tjgrace and @deegee_ott for their continued hard work and passion, and to everyone who joined us for a magical evening in support of ending the HIV epidemic in Canada! Don’t forget that you can join the Legacy Project anytime and get access to all of the events across Ottawa, Toronto, and Montreal. Visit CANFAR.com for more info!

TERRY ON | Beyond Intoxication

Three days ago, ILLUMINATION published Beyond Intoxication — a piece that reframes intoxication not as a moral category but as a shift in perception.

Instead of asking what people do under substances, it asks how their internal mirrors change.
How sleep, stress, trauma load, neurotype, nutrition, and chemistry alter the brain’s predictive model long before behaviour appears.

This lens has real implications.

For harm-reduction teams, it offers a framework for understanding why two people on the same substance can inhabit entirely different realities — and why familiar strategies sometimes fail. It points toward interventions grounded in orientation, coherence, and state awareness, not just risk avoidance.

For the medical community, it opens the door to a more nuanced clinical language — one that treats perception as a physiological variable. Insight becomes something measurable, dynamic, and context-dependent rather than a fixed trait.

And for everyday people, it provides a vocabulary for those moments when they look back at a message, a choice, or a conversation and feel the dissonance between who they were in the moment and who they are now. The piece explains the mechanics behind that gap and invites a more compassionate, informed relationship with self.

Beyond Intoxication suggests that the future of harm reduction may lie not only in keeping people safe, but in helping them stay oriented.

Proud and honestly moved to share that Illumination on @medium published my latest piece today.

Canada’s New Deal asks a simple question with complicated edges:
What happens when the social contract you were raised on gets quietly rewritten?

For years, we were told the rules: work hard, be loyal, play fair.
Then one day, the board changed — and the courtesy of informing the players never arrived.

This article sits somewhere between wit and warning, humour and honesty.
It’s an invitation to look at our moment clearly, without despair, and ask what a fair deal could look like now.

Grateful to Illumination for giving it a home.

Drawing a digital circle of salt 🧂

Made my breakfast this morning and thought about how wild it is that we’ll read every nutrition label but not the fine print that owns our data.

When 23andMe changed their terms, I downloaded my genome.
Not because I’m paranoid—because no one’s going to guard it for me.
Same reason I read ingredients. Same reason I buy local.
Same reason I breathe before reacting.

Little acts of awareness add up.
That’s my digital circle of salt.
Protection and nourishment in the same motion.

And maybe it’s the season talking,
but I keep thinking of Hocus Pocus—
how they drew that circle of salt to keep the magic (and chaos) at bay.
Mine just happens to be digital.

🩵 Full story’s on Medium. Link’s in bio.

We’ve been living in a HomeSense commercial for decades — smiling at the deals, trusting the labels, and quietly breathing in the fine print.

My latest piece, We’re Still Cooking with Poison, started in my mother’s kitchen. She’d found a new ceramic T-fal pan — on sale, of course — and I realized how many generations of women have been sold the same promise: modern life made easy.

What they weren’t told was that ease came coated in forever chemicals.

This isn’t a story about cookware — it’s about trust. It’s about who gets protected, who gets poisoned, and who profits while pretending not to notice. It’s about regulation with teeth, faith with reason, and the right to be safe without needing a chemistry degree.

For the love of my mother — and every woman who’s ever been asked to believe that “clean” means “safe.”

Connection isn’t automatic. It’s something we maintain together.

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the idea of reciprocal citizenship—a concept rooted in Indigenous and academic traditions, and one that also applies powerfully to how we care for our shared institutions. It’s the understanding that belonging comes with responsibility, that trust is sustained through mutual care.

That spirit runs through my new piece on Medium, “Delivering Ourselves: Canada Post and the Future of Shared Stewardship.”
It looks at how a postal service can become a mirror of who we are as a country—how modernization, labour, and care all intersect.

We live in an era that worships speed. But too often, speed comes at the cost of safety, fairness, and dignity.
Subcontracted delivery drivers across the country are pushed to their limits—racing against algorithms, not time.

Canada Post and its workers remind us there’s another way: modernization that keeps its humanity intact.

And for the safety of children, seniors, and the employees who serve my community, I’ll gladly wait an extra day or two for my parcels to arrive.
Of course, I still want the option of next-day delivery—who am I kidding?
But I want that speed to come with conscience.

Tagging @canadapostagram and @cupwsttp — thank you for showing that public service, at its best, is an act of reciprocity.
