Visiting elephants in Thailand was magical — an absolute bucket list adventure. I am so grateful to have been in the presence of these beautiful creatures and their whimsy. My sincerest thanks to @somboonlegacyfoundation for showing us around the sanctuary all day and giving these lovely ladies a safe home.

If you dream of planning your own elephant adventure, I highly recommend Somboon in Kanchanaburi 🇹🇭

Ethical elephant tourism means:
- No riding
- No splashing
- No crowding
- 1 elephant, 1 mahoot (caregiver)

P.S. - @_.fruut._ I wonder what country I’ll find you in next 🌏 (P.P.S. - Pretty sure I tried durian by accident and was 10000% not a fan.)

Exploring is my favorite thing to do! ✈️🇹🇭Loud and opulent, Thailand is the complete opposite of Japan. Every monument is blinged out and dripping with gold. And you don’t understand how enormous the Reclining Buddha is until you see it in person 😱 Insane! But what nearly surpasses the architecture is the incredible hand-painted walls and ceilings of each magnificent room. The level of detail and storytelling is unlike anything I’ve seen.

Staying in Bangkok’s Chinatown was wild. It is the most vibrant, chaotic place I’ve ever been and I absolutely loved it 🏮

We stayed in a drop-dead gorgeous hotel that was formerly a brothel and opium den, which embraced its seedy past in the most glamorous way. Every day, I felt like a kid on Christmas Eve as I waited for the night to fall and experience the countless food stalls, neon lights, and raucous energy come into being like a fever dream. Alleyways bust at the seams with shops and bars that exist in a haze of motorcycle exhaust. The only rule of the road is to do whatever you can get away with, which is a weirdly exhilarating challenge when you’ve grown up navigating the only slightly less lawless street traffic of New York City.

The Thai-Chinese vegetarian dishes were devastatingly delicious, and I am now on a mission to learn how to make hot and sour fried taro ball soup. 🍜

I first watched “Memoirs of a Geisha” when I was 14. I was instantly and endlessly captivated by the women’s beauty; their entrancing makeup, hair and costumes. I was fascinated by the deep traditions of Japan, which were refined, elegant and intentional. It set me on my path.

Visiting Kyoto this spring, I was finally able to experience it firsthand. I gasped as the gorgeous, real-life geisha and maiko entered the room. I couldn’t believe I was witnessing such otherworldly beauty and grace. By luck, we sat front and center, and also by luck, I caught a cloth souvenir signed by the cast of the performance. Yes — I definitely cried.

Kyoto is also brimming with UNESCO world heritage sites and profoundly moving natural landscapes — and monkeys 🐒 What a dream 💕 taken in Kyoto, Japan by @tkmarkarian

3rd time in Asia. 2nd time in Japan. First time doing it with my husband @ryanbertonedrums. Episode 1: Tokyo. Biggest takeaways? Sumo is amazing and matcha ice cream is the key to getting through the day without collapsing.

It is a really strange feeling to be on the other side of the world when our home state of New Jersey is going through a crisis at Delaney Hall; trying to enjoy our hard-earned vacation and honeymoon while feeling so useless to the people suffering back in Newark. Today is our last day in Asia, and there are so many profound feelings about going back to the horrible humanitarian crisis in the States.

ICE “facilities” are concentration camps. Do not sugar coat it. One major realization @ryanbertonedrums and I have had here is just how absurd and twisted the US is. Not like we didn’t know it before, but being here has put it in sharper relief.

When we visited Somboon Legacy Foundation’s ethical elephant sanctuary in Kanchanaburi, I asked our kind and knowledgeable guide — originally from Indiana — if it’s scary to be in a rural jungle area without immediate access to a proper hospital. He said that when he had food poisoning, the hospital was an hour away, but he was given fluids and medicine immediately and it was free.

Just a few months ago, I went to a hospital in Morristown for the same issue, and was never given care despite waiting for three hours. I ended up leaving and taking an extra long time to recover at home. And if I had received care — just like the kind our guide had in Thailand — I would’ve been charged an arm and a leg.

It reminded me that the narratives we’ve been told in the US are all wrong. And we’ve let crazy, mean people make us feel otherwise. Like something is wrong with us for caring. Enough.

See you in NJ. by @tkmarkarian
