I love an opportunity to surprise someone who has a storied, wildly successful career with an in-hand copy of their earliest and most arcane artistic output: it reliably gets a charismatic and beautiful reaction and tends to motivate really fun personalized inscriptions even when a retincent (or not) “Would you mind signing this?” is all that was asked. Thursday night I went to see @susannahoffsofficial play an intimate show at @cafecarlyle and brought along my copy of the Bangles’ very first record, a 7” they self-released in 1981 in a limited run of 400 copies. (I bought it from a shop in the UK eleven years ago and it’s by FAR the most I’ve ever paid for a record.) She was wonderfully gracious and kind in signing it, and really went above and beyond having fun with the inscription she chose. It brought me back to eight years ago when I surprised @ruth.reichl with a copy of her very first, very scarce cookbook (that I’d obviously bought from @bonnieslotnickcookbooks years earlier) and ended up with a magnificently memorializing inscription in it later that evening after we finished a really fun dinner at a really strange restaurant with a few of our mutual pals. Is there a moral here? Yes; I think it’s something like “If you’re going to present your heroes with your most precious artifacts, you need to surrender to the truest omakase-level of trust in what happens next. That’s how the best magic happens.” by @tkretchmar

I took this photo of my dad with a Polaroid camera I got as a birthday present in 1987 or 1988. Today would have been his 84th birthday. As my own birthday approached once again this past April, I started to think about the fact that I was coming up on the age at which he passed. That was an interesting thought project: it was the first time I’d ever really tried to relate to, and understand, where he was in terms of his own understanding of who had become as a person by the time he passed. I’m concretely aware, from various sources, that he was known, by all who knew him, as a true gentleman (in the menschkeit/how to treat others sense of the word) of unflinching integrity, and someone who knew how to - and was not afraid to - call bullshit in any situation where bullshit needed to be called. I hope he had all of that as an internal sense of self as well, and that he hoped for the same qualities in me by my adulthood. Taking stock of who I see myself to be, I do think he would be pleased. by @tkretchmar

There was a historic amount of rainfall in Tokyo yesterday afternoon. At times it was torrential. The entire time it was beautiful. taken in Shibuya Crossing by @tkretchmar

Lilac is my absolute favorite color (if anyone from law school remembers my exchange with our crim law professor about this, I will buy you a drink), so when I spotted a lilac and teal (another favorite color) Sapporo city garbage truck from a block and a half away earlier this week, I made it a personal mission to get a better look at, and photos of, one before I left town. Blessedly, this one rolled right up beside me yesterday to make a pickup, allowing me a measured opportunity for a full on photo shoot. This is the handsomest, most beautiful garbage truck of all time, right? Bonus content in this trio of pics: a stunning yellow Sapporo city taxi I came upon the other evening. I think I’ve gotten too accustomed to thinking that Tokyo’s jet black taxis are the only ones that look good; that’s plainly incorrect even just as to Tokyo’s own taxis but the point is, this yellow beast was an absolute looker, especially under the glow of Sapporo’s nighttime city lights. taken in Sapporo, Hokkaido by @tkretchmar

A few weeks ago I purchased a banana pepper plant that was already bearing substantial fruit. Worrying that this might constitute stolen valor, I attempted to confess my presumptive sin to my urban gardening rabbi, @pete_wells, who opined that in these matters, the only commandment is that “You always want to get the healthiest looking plant you can find.” When my clergy speaks, I listen. 🔴🌿🫡 by @tkretchmar

The dumbest generous thing I ever did that I don’t regret and am still triggered by was hosting a Marcella Hazan themed dinner party for 25 people that featured a fresh fava bean dish portioned to feed them all. Peeling fresh fava beans is the Khyber Pass of dinner party prep. Don’t ever do it unless you’re trying to get a job, investors for your movie, are trying to seduce one of your guests, or you just really truly enjoy them all very much. by @tkretchmar

Sixteen years ago I bought this 4’ x 5’ French cinema lobby poster for my favorite movie of all time, @whitstillman’s Last Days of Disco. I finally got it framed and they did an incredible job. Look how happy I am! by @tkretchmar
