Both the LGBTQIA+ and C@nn@ communities have not only had their battles with receiving legal recognition/justice, but combating social stigma as well. Often times cannabis consumers and members of the LGBTQIA+ are marginalized and undervalued as they are both considered a part of “counterculture”, which REALLY means outside of the norm of society. This, to no surprise, has resulted in some parallels between these two movements.

What a lot of people don’t know is that part of the fight for c@nn@b!s justice in the US made its way into legal conversations because of the LGBTQIA+ community! In fact, there’s a long history of the LGBTQ community’s involvement with the legal marijuana movement.

“The HIV/AIDS epidemic was a major driver in legalizing the drug for medicinal use. Steve L. and Dennis Peron’s legal battle for medicinal c@nn@b!s rights was a turning point in the legalization movement, helping open people’s eyes to the drug’s benefits for terminally ill patients. California went legal in large part because of this fight.”

#repost @whiteglovedeliveredny • As #womenshistorymonth comes to a close, we celebrate the incredible women who have been #catalystsofchange in the c-nn@b!z across the U.S. and here in New York.
1. Wanda James paved the way for the legalization of adult-use cannabis in Colorado and became the first Black woman to own an adult-use dispensary.
2. Mary Jane Rathburn BKA Brownie Mary, an advocate since the 60’s, baked brownies for AIDS patients thruout San Francisco. After many arrests was given permission to continue and eventually helped open the country’s 1st medical cannabis dispensary.
3. Similarly, Lynnette Shaw, a contemporary of Dennis Peron, was the 1st woman to open a medical dispensary in 1997. Persecuted by the federal government, she was shut down & banned from working in the industry until the case was finally withdrawn in 2015.
4. & 5. Assemblymember Crystal Peoples-Stokes and State Senator Liz Krueger were instrumental in passing New York’s groundbreaking c@nnab!s law, the MRTA, despite challenges and delays, prioritizing justice elements crucial for the community.
6. Elizabeth Owens, a powerhouse voice at VOCAL-NY, played a vital role in the passage of New York’s Compassionate Care Act in 2014 by mobilizing our forgotten medical c@nnab!s patients. Sadly, Elizabeth left us before witnessing the full victory of m@riju@n@ justice reform in New York.
7. Gia Moron, is the godmother of New York canna. She has introduced countless women to opportunities within the industry, organized reform efforts, and hosted the country’s first canna-centered conference at a major house of worship.
8. Kassandra Frederique, a strategic leader in drug policy reform, led the charge for New York’s Compassionate Care Act in 2014 and played a pivotal role in the passage of the MRTA in 2021, driving historic change in c@nn@b1s legislation.

Tenacious. Strategic. Brilliant. Focused on community, care and conviction. Many of these women inspired today’s leaders. We honor you!

REPOST • @theemeraldmagazine Women lead cannxbis consumerism. They are the buyers; the trend setters; and leaders who boost business. Despite this, leadership rates are disappearing seemingly quick.

The stereotype of cannxbis being a male-dominated product is changing. Female cannxbis consumers are now younger and heavier users than male consumers, according to a Forbes report.

Georgia Gilmore was an ESSENTIAL part of the success of the bus boycotts. Her knowledge of food and her passion for advocacy and justice, gave the community what it needed. A backbone.

When we do our advocacy work and @taintedlovebk uses food as a tool for plant education and liberation, we’re taking a page from Georgias book.
